I was rooting around the internet to find some more info when I sumbled across this old screenshot. It was pre-halfllife, but as you will notice, it has shadows, yet I don't see any shadows when I'm playing the game, should I be paranoid about HL2 shadows not being incorporated?

Yeah, that one demo thing that was released before the game came out had them I think... but then it was taken out for the real release! :O

Install HL (non-Steam), don't patch it, go to console and type r_shadows 1

Tada. Shadows. They're buggy, but they're there. They're just a mirror of the model on the floor, shaded black and flattened. So they're crude. But, for their time, they looked good

damn, I tried it, they're there, but after being spoiled my Max Payne 2 and Doom 3's shadows, I turned them off right away :)

Damn, got the patched CD version. Will it still work you think?

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't they removed because '1337' hackers used them to gain unfair advantages in MP? I.E. being able to tell if an enemy was just around the corner

yes u need to be a '1337' hacker to see somones shaddow clipping through a wall...

Correct. If you install HL from the original CD and don't patch it, you can issue r_shadows 1 in the console and get the shadows.

I liked the shadows in HL1, they weren't "that" bad ;)

Anyhoo, moved to general gaming.

As far as I know, when a wall in HL2 is an entity, you can do this in HL2 too.
