HL2 and other Source games crash

Ok, I got a new computer and most of my other games work except for steam games, to be exact, hl2.exe. It will load to the menu, but then when it is loading into the game, right at the end, it crashes. It says hl2.exe has encountered a problem bla bla. I don't know what the problem could be, is it dual core?

Here are my specs.

Amd 4400+ 2.2ghz
1024mb RAM, crappy, new ram soon.
300gh HD 7200rpm
cd rom drive
Radeon x1800 256mb with latest drivers
Asus A8n-sli Mobo with latest drivers also I think

edit: hl2 works but dod:s does not. Going to dl others to see if it works or dont work with them as well.


ps. is there a way to make 2 cores one, I thought I heard someone say that it makes it better for gaming.
