HL2 Bullsquid Addition mod Beta 1.

Hey all,

This is my first 'real' go at coding, so there are bugs, hence the beta.

What this does is allows the user to use the npc_create command via the console to create a Bullsquid in HL2 sp, and probably DM if its in the right directory. It currently uses the HL:S model, but im hoping to upgrade the model by the next release.

->Installation:

Unzip "Squidmod" to sourcemods and double click "squidmod" in thirdparty games.

->How to use:

When ingame, press A to spawn a bullsquid, The squid will choose its priorities for each

target, for example, if the squid is attacking a player when an Antlion guard shows up, the

squid will go and attack the guard (Guard will win though)

If the 'A' key isn't to your liking, type 'bind <key> "npc_create npc_bullsquid" into the

console

Sometimes, the squids health and damage will reset, if this occurs, goto the console and

type exec squid to set its default values back.

->Known bugs:

Tail and spit attack do nothing at the moment, therefor the squid will occasionally spin on

the spot trying to hurt its target. Hopefully fixed in the next release.

Death sounds dont work, but all the rest do.

When it spits, it shows green spit in a black box, this will be fixed in the next release.

Whats next for it? Im going to try and add some other removed stuff, theres code for an assassin and a few weapons, hopefully these will be in with placeholder models in the next release.

Is that the HL1 model? I think you should update it a bit. Otherwise, maybe ill try it when you have the spit attack working ;P
 
Yeah, its the HL Source model, the custom one just stays in one spot and doesn't chase people around, I have no idea why they do that though. Seems to happen with all custom npc models.

But it is a beta, and as such, its unfinished, more will come soon.
 
Kudos to you mate. Anybody who can do a mod deserves a pat on the back.

Good luck with it - perhaps you may be able to aquire the leaked Bullsquid model from the earlier Source build? Although that in itself may have been the HL1 model, I can't quite remember.
 
sweet, nice work toad great for your first coding proj. Hell I cant do anything with the sdk :D
 
I keep launching the SDK, clicking MyMod and then losing my bottle. One day, one day.
 
One day you'll realize what a pain-in-the-butt Hammer and coding actually is :p

I agree that all this is a pain, but hell, even when not knowing what the hell is going on it still seems rather fun to just mess around guessing what works and what doesn't. Soon enough, a 2 hour test turns into a 21 hour whatthehell-a-thon.

New version is coming along nicely, The Houndeye is coming back in, although it crashes the game for the moment so it may not be in the next version. The Assassin is also in, but all it does is fire nothing and spin around kicking (using HL1 assassin) so I guess that one will be out.

Spit and Tailwhip should be working, Tailwhip is going to be removed if it causes any more problems though, since the squid does pretty hefty damage with its bite attack already.

ETA on release, hopefully Tuesday.

Also, it seems I left the sounds out from the Bullsquid, they will be in the next version.
 
Update:

Might be able to release earlier than anticipated.

Houndeyes now work correctly, you dont get to see the 'sonic boom' yet as it was causing the game to crash but it does make things move/get hurt.

The AI is pretty good on it, they will try to flank the player in a zig-zag pattern to get behind the player, this makes them incredibly hard to hit and very very dangerous, They aint 'annoying things' anymore, get more than one attacking at one time and they will really damage your health.

Hopefully I can relase beta 2 tomorrow or Saturday once I get the Squid working right.
 
Awesome mod. How about somehow making it so that the Bullsquids actually appear at specific locations in the 1 player game, is that possible?

make some bullsquids appear in route canal....that would be sweet.

as for houndeyes...hmmm...
 
Aye, great stuff Toad.

The bullsquids originally appeared in some of the toxic waste canal parts (in the leak, of course).

I have a few updates too.

In trying to keep with just one thing at a time, im finding myself doing other stuff, at the moment, the current stuff for Beta 2 will be:

Player Usable Stunstick
Command for Supergravgun
Hopefully a fully working Bullsquid
Houndeyes

At the moment, Im trying to get bump mapping on the houndeye & Bullsquid skin so they look a little different since the new changed models still refuse to move when in game. Tail and spit attack for the squid isn't progressing as I would like, if fact, it isnt progressing at all, its just refusing to hurt despite hitting the targets.

Bullsquids and Headcrabs react very nice, since they're mortal enemies headcrabs are scared of the squid and will actually walk off, turn around to see if its still chasing then carry on walking.

Houndeyes are fun to fight against, I made a little movie In the canals, When they are attacking the Female Citizen, you can see how they box her in and make quick work of her. Same goes for them fighting the bullsquid. But its 7mb and too big for here so i'll leave it for now.

Does the health + damage of bullsquids and houndeyes change with difficulty level or do you not plan on adding that?

Do the Crab and Mortar synth as well.

Crabs charge and have a minigun.

Mortar Synth could throw dark energy balls and spit acid at close range.
