I've been making my car in 3DMax and wondered what sort of polycount I should make it if I wanted to plonk it in HL2?

i think in one interview gabe said that the buggy was at 18,000 polys, and they wanted to bring that down. so the answer is, if you want it to run well on most systems, less then 18,000 :)

I cant really help you out with what you asked, but I just wanted to let you know that model looks awsome.

Very nice model.
as for poly counts no official target count has been stated. the buggy did have 18000 polys, but i'd shoot for something more around 7000-10000.

Mmmm Honda power...
Well like Wazz posted above shoot for something in the range of 7000 - 10000.
Btw, what refrence pic are you using?

When its done, can we try it in half life 2, or is that impossible?

not until its released. He could always try it in the HL1 engine like some other mod makers have been doing. Granted the higher poly count makes HL1 crawl, but for just testing early stuff it has its uses I suppose

Ok but lets say he wanted to test it on the beta, he cant?

from what I understand, even if he managed to add it, there just isn't the tools there to make it work correctly, and any results he got would be inacurate, probably lead to doing a lot of extra work for no reason. It would be better to wait. besides I hear the source engine doesn't actually have polygon limits. It's limited by whats reasonable for machines that will be running it.

On an sort of unrelated note, I hope mod makers will remember to make full use of LOD (level of detail) in their models. Otherwise a lot of great mods could end up being awful to play even on the best machines available

man, that's one awesome model. keep up the good work man!

PS - s'all 'bout tha' nissan r34 skyline gtr v-spec II ^__^

just imagine it with all the interior modeled aswell.. and I hope for a laugh he'll model a couple of fluffy dice :)
