I just bought and installed HL2 and everytime I try and run it it causes the blue screen of doom and upon reboot I get a window that says it appears to be caused by my graphics drivers. I have a Dell Inpiron 8200 laptop with a Radeon 9000 mobility video card. This is really iratating. Help! Please!

I also have a mobility 9000. Same bluescreen, except sometimes I'll get kicked to the desktop in safe mode.

Try running in dx 7 mode (look for previous posts on how to do it). It looks like crap, but at least you can play until a real fix pops up.

Maybe it is a Dell issue? I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 with the Nvidia 4200 Go driver, and when I try to run it in dx7 mode (-dxlevel 70) the game crashes and I get the blue screen to do with my nv4_disp.dll. When I try run it without the artificial dx7 set, it just freezes the computer.

I get the bluescreen whenever i quit HL2 or search for servers in CS:S
The way I fixed it was really REALLY weird.
First i had to load the game and put it into the lowest resolution and then load a game, and quit.
It would quit fine back to the desktop so I kept doing this with every resolution until I got the highest, and now it quits fine !
It's so weird, but it's worked twice, cos I tried changing my drivers and got the blue screen again until i repeated that process.
So now it works so I'm not gonna change any settings or any drivers for as long as possible now =)

I looked and couldn't find a way to start in dx7 mode.

Any word on a patch or fix or something?

Well I tried the DX 70 and 80 fix and that didn't work. Does anyone else have any ideas?
