Not a good idea on my first post but yes I ADMIT...until two days ago I was playing HL2 single player I didn't pay for and was not connected to steam. MY APOLOGIES!

Here's the problem. Now that I went out and bought it legitimately and registered and running steam they game runs like crap! Before I was running it no problem on my 2005fpw widescreen at 1680x1050...smooth as butter. Now with the exact same settings connected to steam it is uplayable at that resolution because of choppiness. This goes for HL2 sp and CS:S. If I turn it down to 1280x1024 it runs fine...but no widescreen.

What's going on? Is steam that much of a drag? Now I'm wondering why the he77 I shelled out some cash for it when the legit version runs worse!

And don't say "turn down the settings," I should not have to do that considering its been running fine on the high res's before this.

My rig: P4 2.4c, 1 gig DDR400, 6800NU unlocked, WinXP Pro

Thanks for ideas/suggestions :)

Hrmm, I'm not fully sure on this but when you run Half Life 2/ CS:S through steam (the way you are supposed to) it could be that you are catching some lag from valve's servers. They check content before you start HL2 up and its possible there is some ongoing process lagging you. Not sure though, just a guess.

Laggin me during single player? Even the start up screen (the one where dudes are walking around, options, etc.) is super choppy. I guess what I need to do tonight is try doing SP offline and see if that does anything. Still, even if that were to work (which I doubt) that doesnt help me multiplayer which is what I'm really interested in.

That's normal, from what I've heard 'de-steamed' versions of HL2 run much smoother than the legal version. Nothing you can do about it... other than start using the warez version again.

It's baby jesus punishing you for stealing HL2... or just your comp being wierd.

We do not promote, condone or allow any discussion of the warez versions of HL2.

Frankly if you pirated hl2 and then installed a legit version, I'm not surprised its running weirdly.

Closed.
