G'day.

I have installed half-life2, received the auto-updates from Steam, and appear ready to go.

Before getting off the train in the first level, the game siezes up and exits to windows with the offer of an error report.

My specs are:
Intel Core Duo 2.4ghz
2GB Ram
Gigabyte Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb

I have tried reinstalling (twice), reduced settings, and a host of other options from valve's troubleshooting guide such as the -windowed -nosound option, but these measures have done nothing to discourage the game from crashing at this exact point.

A little help? :)

You say you get the crash with an offer of an error report. So.... what error is it reporting? Help us to help you. Also, are ALL your drivers up to date? Not just nVidia Drivers. Also, is your Direct X, etc up to date?

I just installed the latest DirectX and the problem remains.

Also! Now it is not giving an error report, it is just crashing straight to windows. :|

Try verifying your Steam cache files. Exactly at what point of the train ride does it crash?

About 15 seconds in. And this time it gave me the report.

Error Signature:
AppName: hl2.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: datacache.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00008a37

I started it again and this time it crashed during the introductory speech, right about where he says "Wake up Mr Freeman" and gave me this:
Error Signature:
szAppName : hl2.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

Means little to me I'm afraid... Try shutting down everything that you have running apart from HL2?

I just installed the latest DirectX and the problem remains.

Also! Now it is not giving an error report, it is just crashing straight to windows. :|
I said NOT just DirectX, but ALL of your drivers. Graphics card, Motherboard, Soundcard etc etc.

Also, have you actually used Steam to verify your game cache yet?

Everything has been updated.

I did the verify cache thing then, no errors there.

I get the same problem and it occuring 50% of the time I go into CounterSrike Source. I don't get it happening in any other application.

szAppName : hl2.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

I've defragged, virus/spyware checked and changed Nvidia drivers.
Any thoughts on how to fix it?
