HL2 Crashes at Loading Screen

When I click on "New Game" and the loading bar comes up, it progresses until the very end and then either the screen goes weird and I see double of the box or the hard drive just keeps intermittently churning but nothing happens...

System specs:

Dell E510
P4 3.0ghz
1GB DDR2 RAM
ATI RADEON X600 256MB
SoundBlaster X-Fi
160GB SATA HD

This is a brand new computer. I'm really stumped as to why it can't run this game. The only other game I have is Warcraft III Frozen Throne and it runs just fine.

Well, your computer should be able to handle the game, so that shouldn't be a problem either. I've seen a thread similar to this, but it'll take some time until I find it back again.

Thanks I appreciate anyone's help. I'm seriously just like what could possibly be wrong here. I'm thinking this is definitely not a situation where I don't have the hardware to run this thing...
