Hey guys, reinstalled hl2 after not playing it for a couple years. decided to blow the dust off and play it again. anyway installed it fine, Stream did its updating shit and i started the game. everything worked fine until it the game crashed while on the train.
the only thing it said was "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". no explanation as to why or anything.
im running XP, and have directx 9c, newest drivers for my video card, sound card all that junk.
everytime i go back into it it crashes again. it never did this the first time i played it years ago, and i haven't changed anything on my computer since then, stil running all the same hardware etc.
cheers.

Try verifying your files? Right-click on HL2 on your Games submenu.

That's you problem right there. Only the official STEAM version works. The StReam version is a cheap imitation.

What hardware do you have? Specs. The game has been updated heavily since it was released. Perhaps the requirements are just too much for you now. Your PC could also be filled with years of junk and crap. When did you last de-frag or re-format?

yeh i tried that validating option. didn't really change anything as far as i can see.
hah didn't even realise i spelt it wrong. oh well.
i managed to get past the train station bit, but wen i got to the part where u see barney in the security room and you have to go out the back and jump out the window up the ladder. when you go thro the door to go to the next level. it crashes again. seems to be doing it only on loading screens now. :S. but it does it every time.

video card: Raedon 9550 256mb (have latest drivers)
sound card: Realtek AC'97 (have latest drivers)
processer: AMD athlon 2.0ghz
ram: 3.0ghz

i can manage to run new games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R without a hitch, so not sure what they would'v changed on HL2 to make it unplayable for me now.

Answer his questions, please.

I don't even know why anyone bothers trying to help people sometimes. You ask a question to try any help them, and they make it SO difficult to drag an answer out of them...

For the THIRD time vkboy: When did you last de-frag or re-format?

Also, 3gigs of RAM is a lot to have on such an otherwise crappy and dated system. And RAM is not measured in ghz, but GB, or "gigabytes". Not gigahertz. Did you just get confused again or have you given us the wrong value, and one totally un-related to the amount of RAM you actually have?

i can't remember the last time it was de fragmented. i haven't felt the need to as everything else works perfectly. this is the only game that has been giving me grief.
and yeh, it has 3gig, i've been meaning to update everything else, along with the ram. but don't use the computer for gaming as much as i used too, so haven't worried about it.

So de-frag then FFS. Also, you STILL didn't answer the whole question, just half of it, although judging from your responses I guess it is now safe to assume that you haven't re-formatted lately either - if ever. You should REALLY do at one of those, preferably re-formatting. Your system is filled up with years of crap all over the place that it has to sort through - un-used registry entries, fragmented files etc etc. That alone makes your system even slower.

And having 3GB of RAM on a system like yours is like spending thousands of dollars on flash ultra grip tyres for a $200 mini cooper with rust in it that can't go faster than 50 KM/H.

You asked for help, and your getting it. Now you actually need to DO the things suggested.
