I recently built a new rig. So when i had all my games downloaded on steam i was ready to play. I played CS:S for about 10 min and then all of a sudden, the game froze up and started making a looping sound of the a guy saying "Fire in the Hole" but keep saying "Fire Fire Fire Fire" over and over again until the screen went blanked. i read in another forum that said it might have something to do with your video card settings setting it from x8agp to x4. i have a ATI 9800Pro 128MB. But the thing is, i built my new rig to get optimum performance in my games. So is there another way i could fix my problem? (i have onboard sound with my motherboard)

o man. i apologize for repeating another thread. i just relized it about 1 min after i posted this. i am just so angry right now that i cant play to my optimal performance!

Could you tell me your system specifications?
(If you don't know em : Start --> Execute --> type in : dxdiag )

Anyways, here are some tips.

my specs:
AMD 64 3500+ venice core socket 939
Soltek K8TPro Socket 939 motherboard
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
1 Gig of ram
NEC DVD Burner
Atrix 480 Watt psu.

It could be caused by AGP Fast Writes. That's infamous for causing instability without any noticeable difference in performance. When I turned it off it fixed the kind of stuff you described.

I have the same processor, a very similar motherboard, and a 9500 Pro.

it works. ive lowered the settings down and the game runs fine but i get lower FPS and sometimes, the maps and character models disappear/reapear.

just wondering, if i bought a new videocard like an x800 or something that is AGP, would i have the same problems?

I turned of Fast Write to begin with because i know it doesn't give a performance boost. it just drains down you CPU usage.

Not necesarilly. And your specs looks good enough for an X800 (no bottleneck will occur).
