Well this is the ONLY game where it would not recognize that i have a 4.1 SS. ( my sound card is Creative live and speakers is creative 4.1 also) If i dont select 2speakers in the option menu i get no sound AT ALL. Any one else having this problem? My speakers all work fine out side of the game, But HL2 and CS:S will not pick up my 4 speaker setup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Same problem here. I have 5.1, but can only get sound if I set my game to play on 2 speakers only. A little annoying...

Jon.

wow sorry to hear that you are having same problem bro. Maybe they will patch it?? or is it somthing else?

I'm having the same problem.. I just bought a new computer, and I am using an onboard sound card. By default, the game was set to 4 speakers (which I have). I was getting no sound at all.

I switched it to 2-speakers, and now I have sound. Surround sound works perfectly fine in Doom 3, listening to music, etc. Not sure what's wrong with HL2...

BTW, when I switch it to 5.1, I get sound as well, but the surround sound isn't working properly. ex. When I am talking to a character in game, if I turn away from them, I can't hear what they are saying any more.

Hey Burns and reprev,

What sound card do you have? Just curious... mine is an on-board card. I have the ASUS P5GD1 motherboard.

Have you guys contacted valve about this problem? I sent a message but if more people do that they will know its not just someones 1 cpu and that its a problem with the game.

My sound card is SB LIVE

SB Live? Hmmm.. I was reading on another forum about a guy with a SB Live who had the same problem we're having, and once he installed the latest greatest drivers from Creative the 4 speaker surround sound worked. Do you have the latest drivers installed? |

I have a SB Live in my old computer (just bought a new one a week ago, specifially for HL2!) - I'm going to install it tonight - hopefully 4 speaker surround sound will work, with the latest drivers!

*fingers crossed*

Good luck!

Could you give me the link where i can find the new driver, i dont belive i ever had this driver updated. Thanks

possible solution for Audigy2 ZS owners

Earlier on someone stated that his copy of hl2 ran smoothly. (don't know who anymore, to lazy to look) But the important thing was he or she mentioned his CMSS 3D option was turned off. So, because most of the people say this is a sound problem, I tried to shut CMSS 3D off as well. The GAME RUNS SMOOTH NOW. :E

Even the loading process is much shorter. It only glitches for a sec when autosave comes in play, but otherwise everything works just fine. No more stuttering when a new area loads, when a new sound is made or whatever. YES, finaly a solution that works for me. Perhaps it will work for others as well. I surely hope so.

For the ones with another soundcard, soz, but maybe there is an option that goes with your cards that does something like CMSS 3D.
CMSS 3D gives a 3D effect on sounds that are originaly not 3D (like mp3's or some divx movies. Works just fine mostly. But I guess that Mills sounds is not so compatible with CMSS.
And just to be truly convinced it helped, I even tried it with DoD (not source) because playing DoD was a bit like playing HL2 for me. And now I realised that those troubles I had in DoD started not long after I installed the Audigy 2 ZS in my computer. So maybe it began after I start using the CMSS option. Sounds reasenable, doesn't it.

So every Audigy owner should try this. It not a big thing to shut off CMSS. Just look in your manual if you don't know how. And if this doesn't solve the problem for you, just put it back on :D

PS: Let me and the others know if this worked for you as well. Thx

Thank you for the link, but the site is down:( is there another place i can get the update?

Ahhh I see.. apparently you can't go straight to that page. Weird!
Try going to: www.creative.com

And navigating to Support/Downloads...

I also have sb live w/ latest driver and it did not solve the problem. Won't work in 4 speaker mode, just 2 :frown:

I have a SB live and same problem. My drivers are upto date but still no luck. Sounds works great in vampire and doom 3 but no luck in HL2. Who do I email at valve to let them know?

Somthing to do with support on their web site or sierra would be a good place to look for email addy

Same problem over here, hadn't tried 4.1 until today and getting no sound at all is frustrating.

It's so annoying! I shouldn't have to go out to buy a $100 sound card when 4 speaker surround works perfect in Doom 3 and every other game I've played.

Hola, just had to reply and register because I had a similar problem with a different sound card. I have integrated AC97 audio on my motherboard and could not get surround sound to work either. It turned out that my driver (which was the most up to date driver available), was TOO CURRENT. Once I downloaded an old driver I was fine and everything worked

Same problems here. I got a realtek ac97 onboard soundchip and it only works on 2 speaker setting.

What a HASSLE!

I also have realteak AC97. Latest and greatest drivers.

I dont have a prob with any other program/game/CD/DVD whatever except HL2, what a friggin hassle of a game.

Took me 3 days to get it to load past my new DVD's SecureROM to find out I can't use my speaker setup. Great!

Whats Sierra's email support address?

Hi, same problem here, only get 2 channel. I'm using a HP Pavillion, with Realtek HD. Installed the latest drivers (just a few weeks old) and made no difference. Annoying, all the other games and DVD's work.

hmm

I've got a SB Live and getting the same problem.. I was getting the problem under DoD but after some experimenting I managed to work out that if EAX was turned on I would have no sound but if its off I get normal sound..

[EDIT] Just experimented a bit more with CS:Source and HL2 and believe I fixed the no sound problem. All the SB Live users in your audioHQ open up the mixer, goto advanced mode and in the EAX options make sure all are set to No Effects and you should be right to play the games with surround sound :D

I have a sblive 24 bit with 6.1's setup. I have cs source running on the 5.1 setting. the sound on certain maps lags and echos like crazy. i've turned all tweaks on the device off but i'm still getting the problem? anyone else experienceing this?
