HL2: Deathmatch... can't stay connected

I have turned my firewall off to test whether my firewall was stopping me from playing but still the same thing happened. As I get into the game I have about 4-10 seconds to run around and shoot or get shot until a warning is shown in the top right of the screen saying connection problem which is when the game promptly freezes and I loose my connection to the server.

The weird thing is that I connect then get disconnected so its not like its not allowing me to connect just not play after connecting.

I have tried changing my name in case I had the same name as someone else and also changed my internet settings so that steam thinks I'm only on 256K internet when I have BT broadband 8Mb so I am out of Ideas.

Can someone help me with this as I would like to play the game???

Do you use a router or a hub to split up internet connections throughout your house? If you do, it will most surely have something to do with that.

I can't change anything with the BT router and as far as I know it doesn't have its own firewall... cheap shit tbh.

Every other game I try works fine so why would HL2: Deathmatch be any different... it is only deathmatch that does it so it has completely confused me and my friends.
