HL2 - Deathmatch not working

i'm having a strange problem.

Half Life 2 Deathmatch won't load.

Single Player works just fine but multiplayer won't get past the entry splash (the scene where someone's grav gunning a toilet) ... the splash shows briefly and then i'm kicked back to the steam console.

Another interesting bit ... Half Life Source, counter strike, etc. works fine in multiplayer; plenty of servers show and game play is great.

But for some reason, HL2 won't load multiplayer; also, any multiplayer mods that use HL2, like dystopia and hidden, won't load either.

any ideas?

I'm thinking about completely removing and re installing ...

Are you getting an error about how the game couldn't access memory or something? Anyway, I was having that problem a few weeks ago and finally fixed it by deleting all the content (maps and such) I'd installed manually (as opposed to downloading automatically from a server). Actually, I just deleted all the maps and sounds and whatnot to be sure I got it all, then I did the "Validate STEAM files" thing, which put back everything that should be there, minus whatever file was screwing things up, and voila: game works again.

Lesson learned: Don't trust map packs and all that. I guess. . .

when you say delete maps and such, which specific folders? do you mean 3rd party mods and whatnot? where does hl2 keep it's default maps and sounds?

try "veriying integerty of game cache" ( right click game in steam>properties>local files. )
