I've been thinking about this for a while and I don't think it has been brought up before...
ATI payed Valve millions of dollars (somebody can remind me how much exactly) to bundle a highly anticipated game (Half Life 2) with their new "cutting edge" graphics cards to (obviously) sell more cards.
If the game is now delayed until April 2004, wouldn't this seriously degrade the value of this deal they struck with Valve? I mean, how much extra motivation is the average person going to have to buy a new video card because they get a free game (even if it is HL2) that doesn't come out for many more months? By that time there may be even newer video cards or competing games (Doom III.)
I would assume that ATI's lawyers put a clause in the contract that requires Half Life 2 to be available for the XT card bundle by a certain time or the deal is off or at least that Valve would not get nearly as much money.
So, the question is, isn't this a HUGE motivation for Valve to get at least some version of Half Life 2 out sooner rather than later?
