HL2 Demo problem

I'll cut right to the chase; whenever I play the Demo, in the middle of loading(with the blurred screen, the first actual in-game loading screen), I get a sound effect, namely the one that plays on your computer when you get an error. It plays twice. Now, when I go Alt+F4, there's nothing but my desktop.

BTW, I turned my firewall off, then turned it on again and made the Demo an exception.

Press windows key + m to see it. It'll be the dreaded memory cannot be read error.

NAF - out of curiosity, does the demo run without internet or do you have to 'authenticate' it online?
