Hi HL2.net,

I was searching through the net and found this site.

Does anyone know why, when,I insert my HL2 retail disk it dosn't read? I've checked in My Computer and it says there's no disk inserted.

I really wanna install HL2 and get playing..

Any help much appreciated :)

That's just a general computer error, not HL2. I used to get in on my old computer. Restarting used fix it for me.

I've tried that but still get the same, A friend just said if I try loading the disk up without Steam installed would work

Think its worth a shot?

well if you bought the dvd and you have a cd drive it wont work...
on the other hand i'll be generous and assume you know what you are doing
update the drivers of your external memory drive

A friend just said if I try loading the disk up without Steam installed would work
that makes no sense your friend doesnt know what he is talking about

Hmm, I have both CD-rom and a DVD-rom, I just noticed on the disk its a PC DVD ROM, as i recall I havn't been able to play DVD's on my computer for months because I have no DVD Decoder..

So if I had a working DVD decoder, the HL2 Disk would load?

yesh

sorry but duh
if your drive cannot play a dvd, then no HL2 for you
My good advice to you is on the other hand you could bring it back to the shop and exchange it for the cd retail version (there's 4 of them IIRC)
then it would work

well assuming you have the right specs - seeing as you seem new to computers post your specs here and i'll give em a check

The reason my drive dosn't play DVDs is because I have no working DVD decoder.. and i've never been effected by it since now because i prefer watching DVDs on a dvd-player..

If I had a dvd decoder, DVDs would load, as would HL2?

thanks

well unless you're drive is compatible with dvd drives then no
most people assumed when dvds became the norm that old cd drives just needed new software - most were wrong
not every brand of cd drive had included support for dvds A friend just said if I try loading the disk up without Steam installed would work physically
try a dvd decoder - just be warned that they are for video cards not cd drives and may make no difference

you then have 2 choices
1. swap the dvd HL2 for the 4 cd HL2
2. buy a dvd drive for €50

I have no recipe for the game so swapping the game is out the question.

Would make sense if it worked on the DVD drive I already have.. :S

well try the dvd decoder then or update the drivers from the website of the manufacturer
if that doesnt work well...new dvd drive i guess...

i also hope assuming that this works that your specs are good enough

well good luck post here if you have any more problems

Heres my drivers,

ARTEC WRR-4848
IDE DVD ROM 16x

P.S thanks for all the response

heh, I updated and still get the same.

Guess i'll have to add hl2 to my other dust collecting games..

I'll check back later to see if anyone else has added to this.

thanks:)

well i thought as much see my post above yours - the code for your model is cdrom only

The thing I don't understand is, I used to play DVDs on my comp all the time, untill I reformatted and lost the decoder, and I played these DVDs through my DVD drive and not my CD drive.

So I thought it would of been an easy job getting it sorted and getting HL2 installed.

I have no recipe for the game, yet the CD key has never been registered to any steam account, just seems like a waste..

Then punch your CD key into Steam and download the game legitimately.

Steam > Games > Activate a Product on Steam

Welcome to the wonders of content delivery. The Disc you purchased isn't actually as important as you assume - it's only a distributed cache of files that makes sure you don't have to download the entire thing.

edit: geez... it took an entire page of replies for someone to point this fact out?! The Key is sacred. The Disc is a nice little extra.

damn he's right - kudos kupoartist
it'll be slower though :(

I guess you need the disk for that too..

When I try putting it in that just keeps comin up, 'as if its not reading the disk'.

Ah... I guess that makes sense. Prevents CD-Key theft I guess. I suggest one of these nastily complex courses of action:

1) Have a friend with a CD copy of the game? (not sold outside of the US, if at all for all I know) It shouldn't matter which Disc you use, so you can probably get away with feeding steam their CDs.
2) In theory, you could install the game, running your account on someone else's PC, get it all installed and then remove your stuff from their PC (that's important. The last thing you want is this other person to use your account at the same time as you, thus getting your account banned and losing access to the game permanently). Once the key is tied to the account, the disc should be redundant, so you can THEN download the game to YOUR PC.
3) You could borrow a DVD drive from someone. An external drive would be ideal and relatively hassle free, but if you know a really nice person, they could lend you an internal drive too.

I'll do it at a friends house then
