HL2 E1 wont install due to HL2

I have Steam and Halflife 2 on my PC and want to install Halflife 2 Episode one aswell but when trying to install HL2 E1 it states that i need to uninstall HL2 before installation. The initial screen states Play Game or Modify Game. I dont want to lose my saved games, plus i want to play both. I have found a site that I can download HL2 game levels (Halflife saved games). But I shouldnt have to do this. Has anyone had this problem, or am i being dim?

Eh? I would have suggested copy and paste all your savegames to a different directory, then install and move them back.

hes saying that in or before the installation process its asking him to uninstall half life 2 before he can install E1.. correct? Thats kinda odd, I remembering reading some where on the box that it states you dont need Hl2 to play E1 so why could they conflict... I dont know, I just typed in the CD key into steam and downloaded it off their servers cuz I bought a DVD copy and i dont have a DVD drive cuz mine stopped working for some reason.
