I have a couple questions here, i found a few neat things which i hope can be answered... all from the e3 vid's

1.What is the g-man actually saying in chinese?!?

2.When the demo is showing the barrels fall from up high, and when he's swinging the combine around.. what does it say in the topleft corner of EACH wall tile???

3.And finally this is kind of a tech question... i think i saw this somewhere but clearing it up.. If you used the manipulator and picked up a barrel with no lid full of water, and tipped/threw it would the water spray accordingly??

Well all feedback is appreciated

1. "I guess we won't be working together"
2. I forgot. Something like "HL2 texture" or whatever.
3. No

Well, 3. maybe if they made it a particle effect, but water doesn't have its own properties, or if the barrel had no top then no.

What is it with people and physically simulated water? :)

Its probably one of the most spectacular special effects

Its about consitancy. When people see that the water looks real, they also expect it to act real. But with hl2 thats not the case.

In Half-Life 2, there won't be any instances where you'd find an object containing water that you could break. Therefor, the consitancy is held true since you avoid it completely. Remember, Doom III can not do this either.

What game that you've seen or played (that is out currently) has the best water effects? I'd have to go with Morrowind, because of its consistent quality. What I mean by that is some games like NOLF 2 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic utilize pixel-shaded water effects, but some are done much better than others. For example, in SW: KOTOR, the water on the planet Dantooine looks quite nice, yet on Manaan it looks as though the resolution of the effect was lowered, and it looks, well, too blurry.

LOL! Obviously. Why would the developrs create such an instance if they cant make the water behave the way it should in that instance.

Remember, Doom III can not do this either.

LOL! what does doom3 have to do with the water in hl2? It wasnt a area of focus for the development of doom3.

Yeah, Fluid flow won't be for a while. It will be too CPU intensive and would be pretty much pointless at the moment.

Word. Indoor and outdoor areas in space. Not much room for water in those environs.

It's not a matter of "Can't" really.

It's a "Do we really want this game to require a 3.0Ghz computer?" decision.

I really fail to see the point of what you said...

Somethin tells me when DNF releases (if it EVER does), it will require that fast a comp. Anybody read any of the responses on the forums at 3D Realms by George Broussard? The way he talks about its tech is as if its the best thing since sliced bread. And sliced bread was BIG!

Its been so long I wont even play DNF when it comes out

I said "water in hl2 wont act realistic as far as flowing and what not."
Adam said "well you wont see instances in which water should need to flow out of a container in hl2"
I said " well no shit. it would be pretty stupid of the developers if they made breakable containers filled with water if they cant make the water disperse once the container is broken."

and i said, DOOM III: owned by adam

WEWT HL2 OWNED BY FARVA_MAN!! ROOFLES!!!!!!uno

Actually I beleive gabe said that hl2 couldnt do it first, therefore gabe owns half-life 2 and wow, he really does

You can in Mohaa.. And it's the Quake III engine...
So i don't think it's too CPU intensive...

I think in halflife 3 or 4 it would be possible to have realistic water.. if I was programming it I would look into implementing dynamic deformable meshes.. but dont think current video cards could do it quickly enough

I recall in MOHAA barrels that if you shot would spray water but would stop at a certain point as if the water level lowered below the hole.
Those arent real time water physics. Those are just timed sprites with some added coding I think. The water always sprayed out the same too.

I don't think any game has ever had full real-time water physics that reacts to certain conditions and properties. Sprites are all i've seen, some look really good though.

Amazing how this thread got pwned by the crafty Doom3 troll. Go back to playing CS dude. ROOFLES@!!
