Every time I exit TF2, it hangs, and hangs, and hangs some more. Lets say I hit F10 to quit, it quits the game, but it freezes the HL2.exe and the last image on the screen is from the game. I am unable to close it through Task Manager either so that forces me to restart every time.

I defragged the files. I verified the cache. I don't know what else there is to do.

TF2 is a complete clean install on a clean Vista reformat. Don't tell me it is Vista as I haven't had this problem before. What else could it be? I really, really, really need help.
BTW, it also freezes if I am in the menu, not in an active game, and click the quit button.

Help. :(

Wow think of all the people who are going to come here and find out we don't know any more than they do.

Sorry guys!

Yeah so, I'm going to do a fresh reinstall upon getting my HDD back. I had to RMA it so I'm out of an HDD for a bit.

Also, thank you everyone for waiting 1 ****ing month to respond.

I sort of have this problem as well.. mine doesn't freeze, it just crashes when I exit. Haven't been assed to figure out why, but I've heard of lots of other Vista users with this problem.

i sometimes get the "hl2.net has stopped responding" error message, prompting me to close it. Hasnt frozen yet but im sure the two are not mutually exclusive

Okay Vista made a liar out of me and this started happening:
i sometimes get the "hl2.net has stopped responding" error message, prompting me to close it.

Good news is I found something that worked for me, and a lot of other people.

For users with Windows Vista Ultimate or Business editions:
(Credit goes to blueshot from MS forums)

Right click "Computer"
Click "Manage"
Double click "Users and Groups"
Click "Groups"
Right click "Administrators"
Click "Add to group..."
Click "Add"
Click "Advanced"
Click "Find Now"
Double click "Local Service"
Click "Ok"
"NT Authority\Local Service" should show up in the list now
Click "Ok"
Close Computer Management and reboot.
For users with the Home editions of Vista:
(Credit goes to SWAndersen)
Go to the command prompt (hit run and type in cmd.exe)
and type this in:

net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service

(optional)
then you can type this in:

net localgroup Administrators

and if LOCAL NT AUTHORITY/SERVICE is listed, then it worked. Now go reboot.

PROBLEM SOLVED

So as soon as I opened TF2, I ended a process called "GameOverlayUI.exe" or something like that using the task manager. The black screen upon exit didn't happen! I tested it multiple times, as long as I close that process, it doesn't happen. Now, I have no idea about what that process is but... well... it worked! Anyone knows what GameOverlayUI is?

So I will end that process just before quitting the game because it's useful, I'm happy I can play normally now, without restarting the computer every time I play TF2.

Oh I see what's going on here... doesn't even try the solution I found...
