I have searched this forum and seen some helpful and not so helpful input on this common problem. Anyone with "real advice" have any words of wisdom?

This game/process worked perfectly on my system before Christmas'05 before I formated my system and did a clean install of everything due to new SATA HD I got and vid card upgrade.

So at this point my system is a clean install of WinXP SP2 all updates done. DX 9.0c, latest ATi 6.1 drivers (x850XT card).

Every game I have on my system (and every App) works perfect (FEAR, BF2, Quake IV, NFS Most Wanted, AOE III, etc...).

I do a fresh install of Steam and HL2, no problem. Re-enable my Steam account, do Steam updates, do HL2 updates ... all no problem. Can see servers running in Multiplayer Steam app, etc... no problem.

I launch HL2 (now that the updates are done) and it says "launching HL2" ... but then the HL2.exe process just stops and nothing happens. Freak'ing annoying!!!

I uninstalled it as I had insatlled on my Games partition (D drive) and put it back on the default of C drive (my Windows partition) as I thought that may be confusing it. It made no difference. Exact same thing happened.

I think Steam is OK, it is the game that is getting caught up.

I ran the Steam validation/check utility and all checked out OK.

I am at a complete loss. I have never seen such troubles (especially with a clean install of Windows).

Appreciate your "helpful" opinion other than "your system is screwed up".

PS. I have put my system in DMZ and disabled anti-virus ... it has made no difference (and it shouldn't as I played and finished the game before I formatted my system with system behind firewall and anti-virus running (Symantec V9 Corporate)).

:frown:

Well, you could try deleting the clientregisty.blob in the main Steam folder.

Well then your system is screwed up...

Until I think of something else.
You pretty much closed every possibilities I could think of, so until I come up with new ideas, yes your system is screwed up.
.
Sorry though.

You also tried deleting the "platform.gcf" file in the Steamapps folder?
