I'll recount my experiences with other games I played recently and try to explain how it will or will not affect my HL2 experience.

I noticed that when I recently played and finished Doom 3 I did not get as much subtle details of the 'story' and environment as others, for instance I didn't notice the bloody footsteps in the 'took my baby' corridor. There are lots of other subtle things going on in Doom 3 that I missed because I think Unreal Tournament and Counter-Strike turned me into a run-and-gun type of player.

I don't blame UT or CS, as they're both fine games, but I was way too busy running around dark corridors shooting hordes of demons in Doom3 to be paying attention to my surroundings. It seemed to me that the gameplay consisted way more of running, shooting, backtracking and more shooting than having a storytelling element.

Also, the ingame cinematics and cutscenes didn't really frighten me. I read forum posts of people who thought the lost soul appearing out of that female operator was plain sick and disgusting - I just saw it in gameplay terms: the introduction of a new sort of enemy, and that's all.

Well, moving the thread on to HL2: VALVe say that the game pacing of HL2 will not be faster than HL, which would mean, to me, that:
- I will get all the time I need to plan a firefight, this makes it way more satisfying because you actually can have a plan instead of being triggerhappy at everything that moves in dark corridors and having to react to an enemy appearing in front of your face. Admittedly, HL did have those alien slaves appearing through portals, but they never appeared directly in front of your face and almost never behind you.
- The story will be told in sequences that will make you pay attention. Of course there'll be lots of subtle clues scattered around the HL2 maps, but I suppose the main part of the story will be in some moodier, slower paced scenes so you can pay attention to the story instead of 3 barons-of-hell around the corner.

I hope that HL2 will succeed in making me investigate my surroundings and the subtle story clues. I would hate it if I was constantly forced to be aware of enemies (re)appearing in areas I deemed safe. Half-Life meant to me being able to go back and collect some more ammo you left behind, and to go back for recharging at an HEV station in case you needed it most.

What are your opinions on this? Will HL2 force the run-and-gunner to slow down for optimal enjoyment, even on the harder difficulties? As I said, I expect combat to be intense but I hope to relax and look around quietly in-between them. I also think the physics interactions will make the strolling and wandering in HL2 much more enjoyable.

I for one would love a new game that made me look into it, instead of trying to get it over with as soon as humanly possible. Of course, it also depends on yourself as the player.

Dont know... but you will stay and play with the physics alot.. i think..

Different gamers play differently. Even if HL2 forces you to 'slow down' there will be players who just want to get the end as quickly as possible to prove a point such as 'TEH HL" only has 8 hours of GAEMPLAY! LAmme sucks, valve loosers" etc.

An intresting post!

I am halfway through my second round of doom3 (nightmare now) and I have been much more intent on exploring the different areas this time around.
I was pretty careful the first time but I still missed one or two things.

Seems I am aracnophobic, I think this second time has been much more scary for me as I know when Im about to approach trites (the part where the trite comes down from the ceiling when your looking at the computer screen made me so jumpy I had to quit then and there for the day).

As for Hl2 I think the atmosphere will be much less horrific and much more pumped (I think Deus Ex here....10 minutes till the end of a world). Its hard to explain but I think that you will naturally absorb more of the story as it will urge in a semi-desperate way to stopping what is befalling the world.

Wow, well that makes little sense....It's hard to explain what I mean :(

I can only play Doom 3 for limited sessions - not because I'm scared, but because I know that exploration leads to 'hidden' panels opening and spawning enemies in my face. I can only play so much predictable gaming for so long, then I get annoyed. (Although there can be no doubting about how well iD have done it.)

I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen with HL2.

That's a good point you made there, about the predictability. I recall that I played the last part of Doom3 thinking and knowing I had seen everything the game had to offer. It was just going to be more of the same after a certain level.

Also, in the hell level and after that you just get the feeling you're being messed around with. You then instantly know that when you pick up ammo, or pick up a healthbox, some obscure wall panel is going to lower and you're going to lose more bullets/health than you just grabbed.

Honestly, I tried to avoid ammo and healthpacks in the endgame, because it felt like the right thing to do. I tried to objectively be good at the game and reasoned: "if I pick this up, I'll end up worse than before, so I'll just leave those shotgun shells on the shelf there."

I never, never and I repeat never ever had that feeling in Half Life, if you saw an HEV recharger - bam - it was yours. You had made it that far and the reward was yours for the taking. Ammo? Same thing, if you could see it, you could reach it and it was yours. Noone to take it away from you until you ventured further.

OK, Doom3 is an entirely different game, but I am with Gabe Newell and crew. He said something like: "You can't show the player a big bomb and not have him blow it up." Half Life gave me more intense satisfying moments than Doom3, but admittedly, Doom3 gave me a good scare now and then, which HL didn't do as much.

All the replies goes something like this:

Yea.. like.. i just hate DOOM3.. you know.. it's just the same things all the time..
As soon as you take some ammo.. or shields.. or lame stuff like that.. monsters appear..
IDsoftware sux.. it's so lame.. i hate DOOM!
But in halflife.. OMG!!! did i say HALF-LIFE!! the game was Awesome!!.. never predictable.. GODLIKE!
I love halflife.. hate DOOM...

Valve.. PICK ME! pick me!.. ( read my sig )..

LOL... :p :p i enjoyed that...
( this thread isn't about doom BTW )
but you compare games i guess..

.. yepp... i was sarcastic..
Anyway.
I think with HL2.. there will be more RPG style into it this time... You have to talk to people to know what to do next, or just find that "person" in that "area"... you have to use that *maipulator* to place a "block" into that "hole"... and then get that item on top of that thing..
( it will probobly take 20min or so.. )
You have to get the "jump booster" UPGRADE into you suit.. or SUIT UPGRADE to walk through that radio-active of the game..

I just hope HL2 will not include so much reading... and listening..
If i want to read a LOT.. (lot.. as in RPG games..) i read a book...
If i want to listen to a story.. i ... ( you get the idea )..
But it will be a "genetic" thing i guess.. to talk to every person you see on your monitor...
I WANT INTERACTIVITY!.. and i probobly get it with the AWESOME PHYSICS!! OMG!!!!.. HL2!!!!!!! :)

and.. i just hope i wont play around with the bodies when i am supposed to rescue that man who is about to be killed by a ... puh

oh.. btw.. HL sucks.. DOOM3 owns... :p :p

Well you cant have to much interaction with the NPCs, after all you cant talk! :rolling:

heh.. :) :)
you got me there...
offcourese i mean press on them (use button) and make them speak..

I also wondered: will there be a point in the game where you will lose all your weapons, like in the waste processing part in HL1? In Doom3 you lose all stuff in hell, in Far Cry you lose all stuff once you get kicked out of the helicopter? It seems logical for HL2 to contain such a part as well I guess.

Hlaf-Life started that trend... so i suppose it will happen.. im not shure..
i hope not.. nah.. whatever

Not necessarily. In Jedi Knight:Mysteries of the Sith, you were put in prison and you lost all your weapons.I think it was made in 1997
