HL2 hasn't worked for me... yet.

Just installed HL2, I start playing. The Valve logo comes up, then it comes to the blurry screen with "Loading..." on the bottom right. Then it stays there... I can't Alt+Tab out, I can't Ctrl+Alt+Del out, I have to manually restart my computer, which is something I don't think has ever happened recently. It said before I started playing that my drivers for my FX5900 Ultra weren't up to date. Which was true so I updated them, restarted, then tried it. :(

Its doing the exact same thing to me. CS:S works fine, so I doubt its my video card. Help. :(

Yeah its loading things, mine takes a few seconds to get unblurry and show menu options.

How long have you waited at the blurry screen? It takes quite a while sometimes.

Personally I think the whole loading a map as a background before showing the menu is the stupidest idea I've ever seen for a UI. Just load a freakin' picture so I can play the game instead of sitting there for 45 seconds looking at a blurry blob of color that gives me a headache.

True, when you start the game you want to play it! not wait just to stare at a part of a level you will encounter eventualy... :|

Please help me ! Vivendi can't ! HL2 won't play....

Can some kind person help me ? Vivendi obviously have no clue

I have tried all of the below suggestions from Vivendi....

1. DMA setting on the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives
2. Update firmware for CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
3. Do you have emulation software or a virtual drive installed? (No I don't!)
4. Update the sound and video drivers (PC is brand new, I can't find any updates)
5. Disable joystick port settings on sound card (for Windows 98/98SE only) - i Have XP Home
6.
Another suggestion that has failed:
1.Open your C:\ProgramFiles\Valves\Steam\SteamApps folder
2. Rename the file "sourcemodels.gcf" to something else, such as "sourcemodels.old"
3. Be sure you are connected to the internet and relaunch the game. Steam will need to redownload the sourcemodels.gcf file, but once it has completed you should be able to connect and play.

7. - Why would I need to unisinstall service Pack 2 - my mate has service packk 2 installed and it works just fine
Copy all files from the folder... C:\ProgramFiles\Valves\Steam\SteamApps\YOURNAME\half-life 2\bin
into the folder
..SteamApps/YOURNAME/half-life 2/
Do the same for CounterStrike Source: everything from
../ counter-strike source/bin/
to
.../counter-strike source
Uninstalling Service Pack 2 for Windows XP (if installed) could solve this.

8. Empty your Temp file (c://windows/temp) - Done this. Nothing

9. Defragment your C hard drive (start->program->accessories->systemtools->defragment.). There is 135GB free on my hard drive - do I really need to defragment ?

Other:

1.Checked HL2 properties by right clicking Steam icon. Reads as
Status: ready to Play, 100% acquired. Re-tried and nothing
2. Deleted client registry.blob file from the Steam folder in Program
Files. Switched off firewalls and re-booted machine. Waited for
machine to update Steam again. Retried clicking HL2 icon and same
thing happens again and status reads same as above

My Machine spec is as follows:

OS = Windows XP home edition
Processor = Pentium P4, 3.0 GHz
Memory = 2 x 512 RAM
Graphics = DirectX level 9.x
Hard Drive = At least 120 GB free after installation
Other = Philips DVD8601 DVD-RW drive.

PLEASE HELP ME ! I'm desperate to play the game and I don't want to have to send it back to Amazon...

Cheers
