OKay, So...after a week I have finally gotten Half-Life 2 to install and launch. Now, another problem. God, I hope this game is worth it.

My newest problem is whenever I launch Half-Life 2 it goes does it's thing.. You know, the Vavle guy and the copyright crap. Then it goes to the blurring loading screen. This is were my problem lies. About 30 seconds after the screen appears little grey and black boxes form diagonaly across the screen. Then the game locks up and I either have to CTRL-Alt-Del out of it or reboot the computer. Sometimes it gives me and error message about my video drivers failing. BUt I already have them updated. I have also put Hl2 on my Firewall exeption list and tried lauching the game in DXLEVEL80. Both things didn't help.Though with DXLevel80 the little boxes didn't show up. But the game still locked up.

I also just used the dxdiag software and did the graphics test things and it showed no problems.

I just wanna play Half-Life 2. After combating an installation problem and having to figure out why the freakin' game won't launch. Is that so much to ask.

Sys. Specs.
Windows XP SP 2
Chaintech V915P Mobo
MSI Radeon X800 PCI Express x16
Intel P4 Prescott Socket 775 3.0GHz
100 WesternDigital HDD
Sony DRU 710A DVD-RW
380 WATT Power Supply

I have no clue. That shit never happends to me, my HL2 always works fine. I think its cause of my pc. I have an alienware.

And also, good luck on posting newbie!

Well, the problem seems to be more wide spread then just half-life 2. I downloaded the BattleField 2 demo and tried the F.E.A.R. demo from the PC Gamers dvd and niether worked. Got the same weird gray blocks going across the screen and then the system either freezes or the moniter shuts off(Thats just the monitor, the computer stays on and I can still here sound).

Hmm, maybe you are trying a too high refresh rate for the game?
Try searching for a reset command parameter for BF2 (the one for HL2 can be found here : Link)

It may also be a faulty RAM stick. If you have two RAM sticks, try booting the computer with only one RAM stick. If the problem still persists, try the other RAM stick. If that also doesn't work, try other RAM. If that STILL doesn't work, it's probably something with the videocard or the motherboard.

If you aren't quite handy around computers get someone that is to help you.
