HL2 + New Nvidia Drivers = System Crash

Haven't seen this discussed at all. The newest nvidia drivers crash my system whenever i try to run HL2. I have geforce 4 ti4400. none of the steam updates have fixed this. On old nvidia drivers the game works fine. But on the new ones nv_disp.dll crashes the entire system. It will either reset your pc or if u change the reset on crash setting in windows xp it will give a blue screen of death say nvidia is a culprit.

I know some other people have gotten this problem...

Why hasn't it been adressed???

I had a problem where I crashed pretty bad, world just stopped rendering. I upgraded to the 66.93 drivers and I was fine.

I have a GeForce 6800 GT btw.

can't use 66.93 cause thats where the problem lies a total system crash on my comp.... i'm running on Windows Xp.. since i disabled the *reset on system crash* option i get blue screened with error message on nv4_disp.dll.

I Can confirm the above (as have same GFX card), as i have also suffered from lock ups/reboots and the dreaded sound stutter issue...and i was using forceware 66.XX (nov 9th) drivers. It was only while waiting for the sound patch yesterday, that i thought about downgrading my drivers to the forceware 61.xx (jul 04) drivers so did,and late in the evening decided to run hl2...this is the first time i have played the game for 15-20 minutes straight where the only pause was while it loaded parts of the map..my sound stutter vanished...so dont know if this will help anyone but hope it does cure a few peoples problems.

It seems (from doing some searching on the boards over the last week or so), that the older drivers work with the older cards, the newer drivers with the newer cards. The 61.76 drivers work fine for me (Gefore 4200), whereas the 66.xx ones crashed / rebooted my system.

I can only presume that the newer drivers try to use directX in a way that the older cards can't handle, and it dies. Nice that they tested this before releasing them !

can someone send me, or tell me where to get the 61.76 drivers because other than the 66.93 drivers, the earliest that i have are the 56.72 drivers, which won't do me any good... i have an FX 5700 card... so will the older drivers do me any good? my comp restarts everytime the game loads, right before i'm about to play...i've had hl2 for like... 3 days now and i haven't played it once... it's quite frustrating.. :frown:

ahhhh!!! it finally ****in works!!!!!!!!

thank you sooooooooooooo much for that link... i installed the 61.77 drivers and i can FINALLY play hl2 and cs:s!!!!
