I wouldn't mind having to pay for the HL2 preload today, even if it means waiting for the finished product to be available next week, provided Valve will turn on a few more GBit ports. Valve might need the extra money considering everyone + dog, the entire Korean nation, and countless others will be attempting to preload today. My guess is that we're looking at a good chunk of it, maybe over a GB worth of stuff.

So pay for a partial of something that you will pay for in full in "x" amount of time? Seems you have to much money then you know what to do with. If I give you my paypal addy will you send me some?

what r u on about? he is just saying he would preorder via steam

You don't have to pay to preload, I don't think you even can... you could "send an envelope with sum money in it", although you won't get anything in return.

We know the "preload" is just a partial download of the full game correct?

So he said I wouldnt mind having to pay for the preload".

Not saying I would pay for the game in full now just to get the preload.

So what are YOU on about?

i see your point, but he never said he would pay again for the final game. i think YOU! (CAP I TALS!!) are splitting hairs.

but i could very well be wrong :) you have the final word and we leave it at that ok :)

ROFLMAO!!! where is that picture? i remeber that back around 9/30/03

I have a feeling that the pre-load will be connected to you pre-ordering the game.

It's likely to be payment in full if that's the case.

No you.

j/k

Sorry I just like putting across my "point" because it is hard to express yourself on the "net" and people may misunderstand or not "get it".

And I could be wrong. Thats why I inquired to him to clarify it. It seems for a few "coin" more he would expect Valve to turn on the pipes now.

hehehehehehe Valve....Pipes.....get it!!! n/m

I mean paying in full today for Half Life 2 via Steam, which includes today's preload.

Good point. I have a feeling the HL2 preload will be limited in some sense. It's sound economics I guess. Bandwidth, especially 10Gbit+, isn't cheap.

I think it would be a good idea for Valve to ask for a non-refundable deposit before you can preload, it would save them alot of bandwidth, because I'll bet there will be lot of people who will preload but just don't have the money to pay for it right away. That will waste bandwidth when it's really needed, and the encrypted preload will sit on their computers for weeks while they scrounge up some cash to pay for it.

Just an idea.

I was thinking of buying a retail copy

however, if it will be available today for (a full or even partial) purchase, I will strongly consider a steam copy

Well you have to remember the reason behind all of this. It is supposedly "lookig to the future". All games to be done like this. So I would think if you say your project is ready to go BUT maybe we should "pad" it then you do not have confidence in your product.

So Valve can now charge "creators" of games a fraction of the cost that the distributors do to get games to consumers.

They say Steam can handle it. Its time to put up and start showing the "world" what its all about.

I don't think people quite appreciate how far 8,000mbps goes.

The pre-load of today's part of Half-Life 2 will be available for everybody today. Those wanting to download HL2 from Steam will be able to input their ATI keys if they have one too I assume.

8Gbit for a release like HL2 is nothing. Some simple math. Say you're the average broadband user, and have a 1.5Mbit connection. Maxing your connection out, Steam can handle;

8000Mbit/1.5Mbit = 5333 users. Granted some peoples connections will be slower, and some faster. There are a few more than 5400 people wanting to preload HL2 though.

P.S. This sounds like a job for Akamai and a Cisco CRS-1.

CS:CZ preload was initially available to everyone with Steam, but Valve quickly fixed it. So don't expect to have HL2 streaming down to you without sharing your credit card number with Valve first.

I think this pre-loading is gonna bring lots of money to Valve, because everyone who maybe weren't planning on buying HL2 through Steam are gonna pre-load it just to have something concrete and actually see parts of HL2 loading on their PCs.
