HL2 Problem

I've recently downloaded Orange Box and played through a big chunk of portal with no problems at all, but HL2 isn't quite the same.

The first time I started up HL2, I got about 2 mins into the game (to Breen's welcoming speech on the monitor when you get off the train) and the game crashed.

I decided to try again, but this time, things were worse; the text was buggy and although I got just a little further than before, Breen's voice was an inaudible screeching sound (like sound distortion or something) and the game blue screened on me, without any error messages (had to manually restart the computer).

Now, when I load up the game, it crashes randomly or crashes after loading.

I'm getting an 'Engine Error' message saying 'Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9::present()', which I thought was probably my graphics card drivers, so I updated them (didn't remove anything, only installed new drivers, does that matter?), but I'm still getting the same error when it crashes.

My Specs:
RADEON X600/X550 Series (256mb memory) (Says X600 Pro on my computer tower)
1GB RAM DDR
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 530 (I think that's 3.2GHz)

I haven't tried running TF2 or any of the HL2 expansions yet, but I'll try them a bit later.

EDIT:
I ran TF2, didn't join any games, but I opened the character info menu thing and some of the character's guns were shaded grey (dunno if that's normal).
Also ran HL2 Ep2, got to the communication place, no problems so far.

Yeah. I already installed Half-Life 2. Its been awhile since I played the game and this never happened before.

Install the latest version of Direct X.

Does anyone have a server I can connect to without asking for RCON password?
