HL2 Ragdoll

I gotta say, when I first saw the ragdoll effects in some of the bink videos... I wasn't too impressed... it looked over the top... I thought there was no way a body would just go that limp.

but tonight, watching a show called Max X (Maximum Exposure, an obscure show even over here in the US) had a segment called "think your job sucks?" where they showed a thai electrical worker who was electrocuted on top of a building, passed out and fell off a 30ft building hitting a few objects on the way down... and the first thing I thought of was the Barricade video... looked just like the combine soldier falling from atop that lookout post.

so yeah, good job, its Very realistic now that I've seen what really happens ... HL2 Ragdoll = :afro: very cool

I love Max X

It's one of the few shows willing to show actual deaths on basic cable :p

yeah i used to hate it when people would complain about the ragdoll effects in the beginning of the css beta. thye would always be talking about how unreal it looks. i just wondered what these paople were talking about because when was the last time that any of us have seen a dead body fall to the floor? i for one have never seen this happen. maybe its just me, but i dont think that there is a very large group of people that have seen this...

Max x is in the uk too.

probly the best clip show around cos the presenter over here just rips the pure pish out of the guys getting hurt...

(rip the pish = making fun)

yeah, i also think that sort of stuff is sick....

The ragdolls in CS:S are fairly good, except the feet are constantly falling through the floor, which pisses me off greatly. Looks so damn stupid.

I have never heard of it, I live in Australia.

We might get that on our local cable TV .... maybe

just so you guys know, the guy who was electricuted and fell from the building, he lived... and was fine aside from a few scratches and burns. amazing eh?

wow, that guy must be from the movie "Ong Bak" :p

i saw a lot of footage from the hollywood shootout where some guys with AKs and AR-15s and some modded G3s + excellent kevlar vests robbed a bank and attacked the police

one of the criminals killed himself with a pistol to his own head. they showed it on the news. he fell to the ground EXACTLY like in CS:S (and thus also HL2). Just figured I'd say that.......

I've seen programs like "I'm still alive" or "World's Most Amazing Videos" (UK), because in those all the people are still alright, and for some reason I don't mind watching that ¬¬. That's where I get my ragdoll knowledge from :p. But I think the HL2/CSS ragdolls look great - nothing wrong with them.

Hehe, I just got done watching that exact same segment on Max X. Love the ragdoll physics. Gotta relish watching people get their legs taken out by a barrage of bullets. Puuurrrrfect.

dude, that's just sadistic... :(

EDIT: Or r u talking about CS:S? If so, oops! My bad! :dork:

His feet feel through the floor and everything? Sounds funky.

its pretty goofy when that happens. But other then i'd say its some of the best ragdoll effects around.

One thing I've noticed seriously lacking from any ragdolls to date is bodies 'rolling' down hills, stairs, etc.

For example, when you kill someone on those big steep steps or ramps in Aztec, their bodies just fall to the floor and stay completely stationary. I'd like to see bodies rolling down the steps or slopes, I think it would look awesome, even if it was slightly less realistic. It's like Far Cry - some aspects of the ragdolls are less realistic than CS:S, but look cooler anyway, like how the corpses have less friction with the ground so they slide down hills more.

Apparently they do roll down steps and what not in Half-Life 2, and we already know that CS:S uses a different version of the physics system thats implemented into Half-Life 2.

The bugbait bink video had a section where it looked like the bodies rolled. Towards the end when the big antlion thing comes and hits the combine guards it looks like they rolled a couple times after hitting the ground. I don't know why it isn't in CS:S, although I haven't played it myself.

Max X doesn't show actual deaths guys. Not one episode i've watched has shown a death clip, and i'm thankful for that. I've seen tons of episodes too.

All their stuff is about people who survived this amazing stuff.

Only one show i've seen has shown death clips on TV, and that was americas wildest chases, and it was used to illustrate the point of how easy you can die trying dumb stuff to evade the police. This young couple was careening down the streets, and they zoomed through an intersection and a semi just plowed into them from the side and they were off screen in a split second... they died instantly.

I think it's to do with having the lesat amount of unecessary physics objects moving at once as possible. Depends on whether bodies are server-side or client-side.

Ragdolls are client-side, which makes me wonder why they would be less sophisticated in CS:S.

I found the Doom 3 rag doll physics buggy as hell, like if you'd start smacking a corpse, it sometimes got stuck in the floor and hten go spastic for a few seconds and all of a sudden it's smashed up into the ceiling and fell down again... dodgy

Well, that's just weird then. Maybe it's to save on CPU time?

Working in my country's army (I hate conscription) gives you some good experience about what happens to people when they're out cold (no deaths my side, thankfully.). They go really limp, like a lazy cat. It's surprising how hard it is to get a decent grip on them then. The ragdolls look fine. I just wished they found some way to merge some death animations in. Ah well, that's life.

Anyway, I have those Scariest Police Chases videos. I saw that semi smashing the car bit. Ouch.

How many dead bodies land in the "teapot" stance after being shot?

None.

Other than that blatent shitness, the ragdolls are fine.

What is the teapot stance? Do you have a pic to illustrate? I've found the ragdoll to be excellent in CS:S

I think he means the "bend over backwards" position.

I still think the "star jump" pose (seen when a Combine troop was blasted with a rocket on the crane vid) is a bit odd.

Hehe. I know what you mean but it looks good.
Makes me think of Bobby Gillespie for some reason! :p

TV shows that show real people dieing, for real... sounds pretty sick. Or does anyone here think it´s fun or entertaining to watch people die for real?

What is ragdoll? Is it how bodies react then they hit the ground etc.?

The guy who talks in Maximum Exposure is a retard. Hate his voice and the way he talks.

You gotta realise that Valve adds stuff to imerse you . They won't spend all their time making ragdolls anatomicly correct (bad spelling*).

If it adds to the game they put it in but most of the time don't go over the top on anything.

Gore isn't over the top, ragdolls arn't over the top, weapons arn't insane, enemies seem down to earth in a alien kind of way. It's all their to give you the realise in a game fashion.

Yeah people seem to think you dance and then fall to the floor.

When you die, you die. If its instant its instant - you dont jump back and wave your arms.

I have to agree with the "star jump" pose that flying corpses make. Looks like crap. There are quite a few bugs with the ragdolls, that being oen of them. There's also the "fall over backwards" pose which looks entirely unrealistic. Also, bodies don't react enough to bullets after death, like when a body is leaning against a wall, shooting from the side should make it fall over. In CS:S, the bodies sort of just twitches and stays put.
