HL2 review in the next PCGamer?

On the last page of the most recent PCGamer issue, where they always talk about the next issue, it says "don't miss our round-up of the next big shooters". With Doom3 out of the way, the only remaining "big shooters" to talk about are Stalker and Half-Life 2. Could PCGamer have landed the first review of both Doom3 and Half-Life 2? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Except there is no review mentioned at all... its just a "round-up," which means a list of overviews of the next upcoming shooters.

i think we will see the first HL2 review next month on PCZone
it just a feeling...

I agree with Paintballer. If they had a review of HL2 up their sleeve, they'd tease it a bit better.

Well, if you think they would have just come out and said they have an HL2 review, i think you're wrong. There was no mention of the Doom3 review in the August issue other than "we have a big secret", and that's at least as big a story as HL2.

Right, but they're not saying something at least as teasing for a story that's at least as big. So remind me again why there's going to be a HL2 review in the next PC Gamer?

i think because they gonna release a RC on 30 July.

It can be F.E.A.R, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, GTA:SA
Theres alot of possible games...

It'll just be a rehash..

and some rehash:

PC Gamer: HL2 will allow you to drive 100 feet long monsters known as "s-t-r-i-d-e-r-s". Your new love intrest is a white sweatshirt chick known as Dr. Mossman and the administrator of city 17 is G-man.

gullible fecks. :hmph:

If they had the remotest hint of a review, if they just had shaky cam footage of someone clicking hl2.exe it would be plastered all over the place.

*Crusader looks at newsagent's shelf*

OMG PCGAMER IS TEH W00T AND WE HAVE EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOAD OF THE WHOLE OF HL2 ON THE DEMO DISK

*Crusader gasps and purchases magazine*

*Crusader opens it to find:*

PCGAMER CAN EXCLUSIVELY REVEAL THAT THE MAIN CHARACTER ORF HARF_LYFE TOO WILL BE DR. JUDAS MOTHMEN!

AND THERE WILL BE LONG LEGGED THINGS CALLED "TRIPODS"

And of course no mention of what was on the front cover.

Exactly what do you base this on?

They can't review something that isn't due for another two or four months.

PC Gamer would have said something like:

"You've waited half your life for next month's big story."

Sorry, was a 96% (mebbe 94 can't remember). The only 'flaw' they really mention is failed attempts at humor. The example they give is (without spoiling any details) hell-spawns being instructed to perform 'virgin sacrifices'. Apparently ruins the tense and frightening environment.

94% .....

And HL2 will get 98-100, else people are just trying to be 'cool' by going against the grain :p

OMG, I am tired, for some odd reason, i thought this was doom3... in the rumors and spec section... please delete, i cannot edit!

But in truth, 100% is a far stretch. 98-99% is more realistic. It will probably be 'ever so slightly repetetive' or 'too short for such great gameplay' or 'a few bugs' etc.

Nah, I'd say 92 to 96 percent is a realistic possible score for HL2. Their highest rated game ever (alpha centuri) got a 98%. I would be quite surprised if HL2 beats or matches that. They'll never give out a 100% because that would mean the game was absolutely perfect in every way. Which no game will ever be.

Because they said HL2 will go gold in august.
so MAYBE the first review will be in Sept Issue

Again its just a feeling :p

lol no i think it will come this summer im pretty sure of it ;)

I would laugh so hard if HL2 got a lower review than Doom3.

the amount of people on these forums that needlessly and patheticly talk trash about that game is sickening.

And no, im not a D3 fanboy, im not even getting the game.

I could just imagine the posts...

"0, mY G0rdz, tEh Geys at CP Grmaer GaVE teh DThreE M0ore tAn Hl2...!!! iM g0InG to MaKe TeM EaT my PO0o0o0o!"

Yeah they would say it in riddles or make it confusing like "Catch the review of the best game ever!"

Which may not be Half Life 2, like Stalker.

After snooping about the PCZone forums, a bloke Prezzer who does PCZone apparently strongly hinted its not a Doom 3 Review.

No they didn't :)
I'd like to believe it but I'm going to err on the side of cynicism for now.
Jimmeh - what kind of hinting? What kind of apparently? Once again, cynicism... And I used to be such a happy-go-lucky scamp <Sighs>
About the percentage - who cares exactly what it gets. Very probably mid/high 90s but so what? There'll be hardly any difference between 92% review or 96%. And as for 99%, it's simply not going to happen; editors don't like their reviewers going too over the top. And so what if Doom3 gets a higher review score? The difference will probably not be much and that won't stop it from being a good game. But Dougy, you're absolutely right - people would completely over-react. Silly people.

Any chance of a quote, the PC Zone forums are painfully hard to browse.

hehe, I know what you mean - but I can only get quote where some forum user RichieHell mentioned -

"Now, what exactly are you reviewing next month? Wandy strongly hinted yesterday that it isn't Doom 3. I won't rest till I find out."

We'll see eh?

EDIT : In my above post i meant someone called Wandy not Prezzer. Sorry got a bit mixed up heh.

Then that game must cost only 1 cent, 0.0000% bugs, 356 days to complete, look exactly like real life graphics and physics, all the weapons in this world and super easy mod making. :E

j/k

I doubt HL2 will get 99%. PCG used to give higher ratings in the past during the 90s. Now they usually give lower ratings, like if other sites give it above 90%, PCG will give it like 85 - 89%

But HL2 should be able to hit at least 95 - 98%

You realize that PCG is writing the next issue right now? That means they'll have to get a complete and fully playable version within the next 2 weeks or so. If HL2 has a relatively painless gold period, it might be possible.
