In CS:S I turned on netgraph figuring the choppiness was packet loss related.

Well when I 'lag' (i say that cause its the same kinda things that would happen if it was lag) my fps stay high at 80ish and never drop AND my ping doesnt fluctuate at all (usually around 45). Also the green line meaning good connection stays green, no yellow or red.

So it seems the problems with my computer as opposed to my connection:
1gig ram, AMD64 3200+, 256meg pciexpress 6600, oh cable modem by the way

Ive tried different video drivers, its soo strange, someone please help!

Thanks

i get the same problem with dod:s. i get 'choppy' areas on maps. but if i, say, look right, it stops. look back again and it gets choppy. its only started doing it like a week ago or something. it also takes a while to start happenening. 10-15mins of playing and it starts happening...and ONLY in dod...its so weird. when it starts happening, if i turn on the flashlight it stays choppy until i turn it off...

though i turned the anti-filtering down to 2x last night and it didnt happen...yet

just weird that now i suddenly have to lower specs when it was fine about a week ago...

AMD64 3000+, 1gig Kingston DDR, 9800pro 128mb (soon to be a x800 of some kind

Ok. Packet loss is because (not only) of the rates you use. Counter-strike Source is a bitch to set-up and isn't really user friendly. But nevertheless, loss is when your computer isn't sending enough packets to the server, and so your position isn't accurate. so finding how to stop loss is so hard. Here's what I do:

I don't know how fast a cable modem is (but let's assume it's 1mb/s - same as my ADSL connection):
Type these into console (or put them in a .cfg file in the config section of the Counter-strike folder)

rate 20000
cl_cmdrate 80
cl_updaterate 80

Using net_graph you can keep tweaking these until you get them so you get no loss (under 10 is acceptable). It's also good to note servers can only send a certain amount of packets per second. So setting all those too high causes choke (Sending so many packets the server just discards the rest). Try and find the perfect balance for your connection

If I'm wrong anywhere correct me :)

EDIT: Dynasty. The reason you're getting such low FPS is because you're setting your graphics too high. Lower them and you'll get more FPS. In DoD, if you have bloom/ full HDR on, it could be that your card is overheating (mine's the same). Turn graphics down / stop overclocking and it'll be fine.

hopefully fixes it

Thank you! I will try that. It seems almost certain that loss is my problem.

Does netgraph show 'loss'? I never noticed. If not, how can I tell if i get my loss under 10?

yeah net_graph 3 in console will show loss and choke at the bottom of the small bits of writing that show up.

Sometimes when you first join a server you do get choke and loss for a round or two. So play a few rounds to make sure it evens out.

It worked!

AHA!

It worked perfectly! I verified my CS:S i guess.. I ran it, then walked away then when I came back it didn't say anything...

So I then put those 3 lines into my cfg and goodbye loss!!

Thank you so much everyone, you've given me my game back!
