has anyone tossed around the idea that the eastern european-like city setting could be austria? i was just reading the manual for the original and it mentions that gordon came from a university in austria. maybe he returns to shoot some things in the head. i don't know.

Could be, it's worth remembering when it finally hits our hard drives. :)

Do you mean in terms of inspiration or literally? The game's setting is called City-17, so I don't think its supposed to be any one city. A post a while back said it looked the most like Prague.

I've just hit "Reset form" instead of "submit reply". I'll type it again.

Yeah, Gordon attended a University at Austria after he's been to MIT. It would explain maybe why Gordon would want to go back but it doesn't really explain how everyone else got there.

Could still be Austria though.

I'm expecting to be surprised when I first play Half-Life 2. Gabe has already said that the player is going to say to himself "This is not where I expected to be" when we first start playing.

I like surprises.

And he says this with a huge smile on his face. (It's a Video Interview.)

"This is not what I expected, this is different from what I expected."

you never tore a closet apart looking for your christmas presents?

I tried to get into my parent's cupboard by standing on the bed once. But I had muddy shoes so my parents found out.

Hmmmm I'm wondering if you bust out of prison at the very beginning in HL2? Who knows? In a way it would make sense.

It's a little odd that some of the signs and billboards are in English, isn't it, if the game is more mainland Europe than England.

I think that's more of a "Don't want to confuse the players" thing.

Yeah, City-siebzehn :- )

Hmmm, I'll search for a city next to a large lake in Austria on the map...

Ever notice how in Return To Castle Wolfenstein and the Multiplayer Add-Ons they seem to speak english

Video interview? I've never seen it, can I download this somewhere?

yeah austria sounds right. Might be the reason why Gordon never speaks, they didn't want him to sound like A. Schwarzenegger...

Doesn't HL2 feature a dried up seabed as one setting? Cos if it does, it can't be Austria, because the country is landlocked.

lol. austria looks quite different. i have been there more than 10 times.
city 17 could be poland or russia or something like that. but not austria/germany

im sure theres loads of plot twists that'll make things interesting.

here's a scenario- Black Mesa is an interplanetary company intent on subverting other planets. Gordon was the chosen task leader for the earth project. Gman is actually a hermaphrodite, and gordon and gman have little scary alien babies. :D city 17 is not on earth at all, but is another planet full of hospitable little fellas just waiting to be headcrabbed. The alien force are the foot soldiers, gordon is the one man clean-up operation :p

it was all a dream. the alarm clock was buzzing and it was still raining. the wait at the bus stop would not be pleasant. and his mother had laid out the pants that only reached to the middle of his calves. gordon sighed and put on his glasses, broken and taped for the 4th time this year. he would be beaten again - this is, after all, the life of a nerd in the 7th grade. that was a good dream though. guns, aliens, and a goatee...
