HL2 Single Player Major Problem

I keep getting these two errors messages whenever I start up HL2. I get to the loading screen without a menu and then it just exits out and gives me these two error messages in succession.

restart your computer. Make sure you have no other 3d aplications running.

I tryed reinstalling half life 2 and restarting my computer. I also installed the latest drivers for my graphics card. (radeon 9700 pro). Ill probably call tech support next but if there are any suggestions or solutions they are welcome.

Are you sure you have directx 9.0c installed? If not go here and do it now.

Other then that, I'm not sure what would cause this problem.

yea i installed directx 9.0c and i still get the same error message so im gonna call tech support
