will the source code for singleplayer be supplied with sdk or anything??? i'm not sure. Like, could we change single player to have George W. Bush instead of combine or something?

There's no single-player source code (as opposed to multi-player source code). It's Half-Life 2 source code or it's not. As such, no. Have you forgotten the brouhaha caused by the source code theft last year?

[takes long hard stare and shakes head in disbelief] ................. please tell me your joking

yes i am joking about that

what about HL1:Source? Will we see any code from that either?

The source engine is the source engine, there is only one version.

No Source!!!!!!!! You Idiot The Russians Stole The Source Code From Valve!!!1 It Was Their Only Source Code!!!!! Now They Dont Have One Grrrrrr!!!!1!

Ok, I think I am being misunderstood here....

Here's what I am proposing.

I am toying with the idea of creating a machinima movie of HL 1 or 2

I don't want the ENGINE source code

I need the source code that makes up the singleplayer sequences (AI scripting, singleplayer dynamics) to be able to do it.

I think the AI is pretty much secret.

Or else why didn't the CS bots used the HL1 AI ?

There's no coding needed for this sort of thing, it's all done in files created using either Valve's software or third-party software. at least it is for the first one, so assumedly it's very similar.

you guys don't realize what i'm trying to do....
basically, i want the:
levels
NPC & monster placement in the levels
NPC models
NPC facial animations
NPC lines
plot development
scripted sequences
code that ties it all together

TO MAKE A MOVIE OF HALF LIFE ONE OR TWO USING ALL OR MOST OF THOSE PEICES.

GO HERE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MACHINIMA IS:
MACHINIMA

I already told you, you can do all of this without any access to the code, but with software supplied either by Valve or a third party. You don't need the code at all to achieve this -- you simply animate the models, record audio, and trigger the sequences in the maps. You can use camera entities, and then switch between them.

levels: Valve Hammer Editor
NPC & monster placement in the levels: Valve Hammer Editor
NPC models: XSi
NPC facial animations: FacePoser
NPC lines: Audio recording software + Valve Hammer Editor
plot development: what? what made you think you need code for "plot development"?
scripted sequences: Valve Hammer Editor
code that ties it all together: not needed for what you're trying to achieve

Once you have it all set up, just record a demo using Half-Life 2.

You shouldn't be getting angry with us synthos, I was surprised to see noone has flamed you to death yet.

Listen to Kage he knows what he's talking about.

hey, come on, synthos. do you honestly believe there is a chance, that valve will release the source code in the near future. no way, of course! a game company NEVER release their source code at the same time when the first game, based on it, gets released.

.. maybe some years later they will do so.

he doesn't need the source code. he needs the SDK, which will be released on or soon after HL2 comes out.

You could, but you'd have to delete all the AI subroutines to make it anything near realistic. A new low poly model would also be required, with the following three facial expressions (morphing one to another not needed): Grinning, blank stare & confusion.

make that four

don't forget the "how the hell did i become president" look

You intend to do all these things and yet you don't know whether source is available or what is required to edit the models and such...

give the guy a break, he's gotta start somewhere

I think he's basically refering to the final build of the game so he can manipulate that to his own ends. Not the source engine but what Valve did with it.

Not sure why he'd want that tho. Machinima can be fun tho!

So you want hl2 code, to make a hl2 movie, in hl1, with hl2 models and stuff but with hl1 engine? Please make some damn sense.

whatever.... somehow, this isn't quite getting accross...

Remember an SDK will be out months before release. Right? Just like that benchmark....

In Soviet Russia, Code steals you!

let me lay this out for you
this is end result that I want to accomplish

if you visited that machinima site early, you would know that machinima is about making movies using 3d game engines. machinima.com

what I would like to do is to take the half life 2 engine, and make a half life 2 movie out of it.

So
imagine this.

it's the single player.
ONLY, that it's almost a multiplayer
there will be someone else connected that is watching you, filming you (not interacting with you or AIs, a spectator) playing through the single player plot.
To do that part, I would need to edit some of the code valve wrote.

My question is, do I have ACCESS to that code? Is it with the SDK?

As well, I will probably have to model Gordon (since I doubt Valve bothered) and make sure he is visible to the filmer.
And one last thing, i think it would be neat to add some more "action movie" moves to the game, like diving or rolling... Yet again, will I have access to that code?

I'm sorry I was short with people earlier, I was in a rush and couldn't figure out why people were misunderstanding me.

This had better clear things up -_-

Valve will model gordon, since its usually a basic requirement of a FPS to have the lead modeled.

besides that every question you ask the answer is YES.

p.s I dont think your stupid I just dont think you have ever made a machima production before and understand what your undertaking here

thank you thank you!
someone who understands.

About gordon, you never see him? So why would they bother modelling him?

Multiplayer. plus you can play with the console in hl to view the game from third person. plus the AI aims at a person if i remember correctly. not just a point in space
