HL2 stops responding with no errors reported

I recently just wiped my hard drive because when I started HL 2, I could see the guy with the valve for an eye, get part of the sound, and then it would lock up. After the wipe, I reinstalled everything, waited FOREVER for HL2 to update, and now when I start it, my resolution changes, and it stops responding. Resolution changes to 800x600 I believe. Any ideas?


Running: AMD Duron 1.3, nVidia 5700 LE 256mb, 1.0 gig DDR 2700 Ram (clocking at 100 mhz because of the stupid processor), Soundblaster Audigy LS soundcard, and 70 gigs of hard drive space left.
 
Alright, got past the guy with the eye valve thing by installing omega drivers, new monitor drivers, and new motherboard drivers. Now the game says Loading in the bottom right, then freezes so bad I can't use the windows key or ctr+alt+dlt to restart, and I have to do it manually.

Suggestions?

P.S. Counterstrike Source works great.

i have the same problem
except even after omega, and driver updates, it still wont get past the damn valve guy screen
css works flawlessly for me too
 
So it's probably not drivers, could it be something in Service Pack 2? I recently got that, but I can't think of anything it could have done to make a video game not work.
 
CS source won't work flawlessly for me.. do you have to wait for a really long time before it works? Cause i waited for about half an hour and still nothing... just stayed at the background with the 2 CTs and their m4s.

BTW when you said Monitor drivers and omega/motherboard... Do you mean like a Video Card Driver download kinda thing?
 
yeah i have a 9800 and i installed the omega drivers for that
went to the asus site and dloaded latest drivers for my kt600

no, css loads REALLY quickly for me...faster than regular cs, i think
is there a command where you can disable the valve movie playing like in first HL? i want to see what happens if i do that....
