I found this on the wall in the Follow Freeman chapter, and wondered if anyone can shed some light on how this fits into the HL2 storyline puzzle? It sure looks like a combine soldier holding a baby.....which we know there are none.

I can't remember what the 'caste' thing meant, nor can I be bothered looking into it, but the general consensus is that it is combine propaganda, suggesting that the combine can and look after humanity with love and affection.

The faceless combine cradling a baby...could mean many things.

1. Could mean they are here to protect/keep us alive
2. Could be resistance graffiti trying to tell people we are being treated as inferiors by a stronger race
3. Could simply be associating the fact that the combine have taken humanities ability to produce offspring.

Who knows....and i actually prefer it remain unexplained. Mystery...ohhhh :)

It's resistance propaganda that suggests that the combine are treating the humans badly-- it is a 'caste' system. The baby is drawn as being scared to reinforce the message. That is all.

That sounds like the complete opposite to what the graffiti is about.

Why would the combine post graffitti?

It's resistance graffitti: the combine 'mothering' of the humans (the scared baby) really creates a CASTE system, and humans should resist it. That's all there is to it.

It makes more sense for the resistance to draw graffiti, but it makes more sense for the combine to draw that specific graffiti. I remain undecided. Stop saying "That's all there is to it" Because it isn't. Jesus christ.

According to the dictionary, "caste" means:

A social class separated from others by distinctions of hereditary rank, profession, or wealth -- A social system or the principle of grading society based on caste; the social position or status conferred by a system based on castes: "lose caste by doing work beneath one's station."

I think the graffiti is Resistence commentary about how the Combine view the human race.

I think that the combine think we (humans) are weak, and that's what the baby represents.

I always found it to be 1 of the below:

The combine could be holding onto the child which represents what the combine use to be(Human) before becomming a combine. I.E The combine soldier holds the child(Innocense) asif holding onto the last bit of what human he is.

The combine soldier cradles the child lovingly as though representing that the combine could still have feelings and rebel against their 'programmed' thinking about the humans.

Just my 2 cents.
