Hey i'm *might* try and get a few people together to make a total system benchmark for HL2. Testing RAM (processes running at once) CPU (various tests) and Video card (Pure polygon rendering, shader performace, composiste performace)

If you're a coder and you might be interested, post here. I'll see how much desire there is for soemthing like this, then i'll decide if I want to continue with it.

i dont either...arnt they releasing one within september 30th?

you don't get it? :farmer:
It'd be a set of auto running routines that would ge tthe average FPS for each of the tests (see original post). It would then combine them (in a way that would fairly reproduce actually gaming performance, unlike 3Dmark03)

It would then give you a score of some sort.

Yeah Valve is releasing one, but as far as I understood, it would be a "plays hl2 well, plays hl2 poorly, etc" type thing.

No, what Valve is releasing is a real benchmark. So you can tune it exactly to what setting you like, and see how much fps you get in an average HL2 enviroment.

What you will get from doing something like this is NOTHING that represents HL2 performance. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Cause you aint got HL2... There is to many unknown variables. You need to know EXACTLY (down to the last instruction) what HL2 does in order to make an accurate benchmark good enough to be called a HL2 benchmark.

we dont even know what valve's will be like...i dont see the point if everybody here is pretty much going to buy hl2.

No i'm talking about making a benchmark in the form of a MOD. to be released a few monthes after the release of HL2....

err ...mod form? like playing a hl2 demo just to see if it runs ok for your system? if its a mod, wouldnt you need to have hl2 to play the mod. therefore what would be the point of the benchmark your making if you have hl2 already?

im kinda confused on what your trying to accomplish, sorry if im sounding like a jackass

....

Ok. I would take Half-Life 2. Use it's amazing mod capability and make a non-controlable mod, where it records the FPS, on average for each section, and use some system (to be determined and tweaked at a later date) to produce a number score. You would then be told that score.

Think of 3DMark01/03. That type of thing. It would be a general system benchmark (along the lines of UT2K3's botmatch/flyby, but more complicated w/ more info). Not a benchmark to determine if you play HL2 well.

obviously, since i've only gotten questions, you aren't very interested in the project.

i thought thats exactly what hl2's benchmark going to do...

basically a non-controllable mod that takes stats on your computer and gives you output nubers or w/e

i guess we will find out soon, but i guess your idea isnt all that bad if valve doesnt plan to do what you just described.

Yeah, I htink i misuderstood valve's plan w/ the benchmark. oh well. It was jsut a thought.

the greatest minds in the world probally had "just a thought" before ...but hey....look at em now. we will see when the benchmark tools come out, if its not what you described i wouldnt mind putting up a site for ya if you actually deside to do this.
