HL2 won't install - help!

My installation of HL2 quit on Disc 4 when the installer complained it couldn't find a file. I read somewhere this will happen if you deselect CS in the installation menu, which I did because I'm not interested in CounterStrike. (How stupid is Valve for allowing you to deselect an option without which the whole program won't work?)
So I went to re-install, but now Disc 1 won't launch. No more autorun, not even Run->D:\Setup. How do I get the installer to run again?

Never mind

I had Disc 3 in the drive instead of Disc 1; that's why setup was quitting on my reinstall. Although it's odd that there's a setup file on that disc that can be run, shows the opening menu, but if you select "Install," simply quits without any other message -- like "Insert Disc 1." All part of Valve's "we'll give you as little troubleshooting info as possible" policy, I guess.

i kept 2 hl2 disc in my drives but jsut install the game with cs and unistall it l8r
