HL2 wont open

I get the 'preparing to play hl2' box' and thats it. The longest I've left it was half an hour.

try going to C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\{your steam username}\half-life 2\ and running the "hl2.exe" process seperately

Won't let me, says error. I have this problem since I downloaded the new version of Steam.

Try logging out then logging back in.
