HL2 wont start...at all

yeah, this is quite annoying, considering i bought the game over the counter so i could play it today and not have to wait for all 3.3 Gigs (or whatever it is to download...

so it gets installed, i get my 'steam' account, HL2 gets its key registered, i go to 'play games', click on HL2...the HD light blinks a bit, the DVD light whirrs some...then...nothing

i need help 'cause i wanna play this game badly...

PC Specs:

Dell Dimension 8400
P4 3.00 GHz processor
1GB RAM
111GB free space on the hard drive
Direct X 9.0b
Sound Blaster 2 w/5.1
ATI Radeon X300 series 128MB graphics card

i only bought it like...two or three weeks ago...

please help me! XD

oh, additional to my PC specs:

16x DVD-rw

and yes, i bought the PC DVD-rom version
