Im not shure if this is old but i picked up a copy of this magazine at best buy called "GameStar" its a new magazine and i got because it had some cool movies and the front cover had an awsome picture i never seen before. It also explains stuff about hlfaceposer. I found it was an interesting read.

One of the craziest things about Half-Life 2 is when it ships, mod makers and game programmers will have free acces to a full-blown SDK(Software Development Kit) that basically lets people make there own games based on on Valves HL2technology. In doing so, the Valve crew hope to foster a sort of independent game scene.

The one tool that excites Newell the most is Face Poser, a scarily easy-to-use character behaiver tool that does anything you could hope to do with a computer generated avatar. It even does most of the "hard stuff" automatically-record a .wav file, for example and Face Poser will lip synch your character for you. "Bill Fletcher [one of the artists] was in the feature film department at Disney," says Newell, "and he said we have better tools for building characters and animating them in Face Poser than he had at Disney."

Newell hopes the mod community does what he feels a lot of developers cannot. "It feels to me like its too risky for a lot of professional game-development teams to do innovative stuff. Budgets are so high, schedules are so tight and they're in these situations where they're not going to push crazy ideas."

Speaking of crazy ideas:"for Half-Life 2, i had this design in my head of these things that lived on surfaces of things," says Newell, "so when you were looking at things you wouldn't always be shure that one of these creatures weren't there. And you could transport them, and some of them could only live in wood and (this is an old idea) you had carry them with you. Basically they would come out of the wood and talk to you...I thought it was really cool...sometimes the rest of team has to talke me down."

I think we'd seen this, but it's still pretty good info. Gabe's wood-creature idea is bizarre, I wonder how many other ideas like that they had?

What is this "HL2World" you people speak of? Is it some sort of magical web-site? :dork:

What is this CS:S Port you speak of also.... sounds like the E3 2004 stuff has been leaked!! I heard about this a while ago, but I didn't think it was real.. WTF?!?!

BTW: Faceposer looks great, can't wait to try it for myself. I wonder what happens when you fart into the mic for the input, does their mouth go all crazy and stuffzorz?!?!?

Okay RedBadger, I'll get back on track. I can't wait to see some of the stuff people do with the faceposer. Seems like a huge innovation. Just imagine playing online with realistic faces talking when you use voice comm.

So what do you guys thing about the atoumatic lip synch thing with the .wav files. I think thats pretty neat.

Anyways.

DO you think if we talk on the mic will lip synch work? or does it have to be a .wav file to get lip synch to work?

Any ideas?
 
I remember Gabe saying that, at least in multiplayer, it uses a simpler algorythm for the lip sync, but it's there.

For single player content, I think you have to go and edit the .wav files with one of the HL2 tools and add triggers for emotions and whatnot.

ahhhh, so multiplayer wil have lip syinch but not as advance as they have it in sp?
 
that's cool I wish I had the paitence to learn how to make mods.
