i heard you can make hl2 vids of in-game action. i dont have it yet but my friend wood like 2 no.

-) put that in ur autoexec.cfg
bind "F11" "host_framerate 30; startmovie temp"
bind "F12" "endmovie"
-) record demos while u play
-) run the demo
-) press f11 to start recording
-) press f12 to stop recording
-) download virtualdub
-) file -> open video -> image sequence
-) select the first of the .tga files (should be named mapnam_tmp_0000.tga)
-) audio -> wav audio -> temp.wav in the hl2 directory
-) file -> save avi -> select destination and name

done
u can also compress the videos if u have codecs installed
video -> compression
btw: turn every thing to high when you are rendering the video
it wont affect the video framerate and does look better

he jsut told you how to do it, at least say thanks to hide your stupidity.

some encoding tips to shrink the filesize:

NEVER USE RESOLUTIONS ABOVE 800x600 !!!
instead, use fsaa to max (should be at least 4x) and aniso filter too at the max (8x at least)
its also always a good idea to render your videos in widescreen aspect ratios .. there are 2 reasons about this
-) you get more peripheral viewsize
-) you can live better with lower vertical resolution while maintaining the same overall resolution (848x480 will look better then 800x600 although 848x480 has lesser pixels)

if u plan to shrink the vids and edit them later:
use divx4 or 5 with bitrates over 6000kbit/sec
this should compress ur videos to almost a 1/15th withoug noticable decrease in quality

if u render final videos:
use xvid or divx5 with bitrates of 2200-2800kbit/sec
you may want to experiment with cbr (constant birate), vbr (variable bitrate) and 2-pass vbr (2 renderpasses to use a more complex vbr curve)

Note to self: Don't leave computer while rendering movie...

I just wasted 20 gigs and I'm trying to delete it now.

Oddly enough, I couldn't get the audio file to work, it was corrupted.

Sure enough, the sound was all screwy while exporting the video, but I assumed the sound was processed by itself.

I tried recording the ending of HL2 and for some reason when I make it into a movie the video goes really fast so the audio doesn't match up or anything. How do I keep it at a normal rate?

the audio should be rendered at the same rate as the video
if you put them together they fit perfect.
at least for me

Ok..How can you do that if you don't have a widescreen monitor? For me, any other aspect ratio is greyed out.

run hl2 in window mode

thanks man! that's awesome!

Why does the sound not match up and why does it play so fast?

complete the steps and uploade a small cut of a video somewhere so i can see whats wrong.

I'd make videos but so far I'm sticking entirely to demos... file size difference means a lot on 56k

Once I master scripting (hell, even quick console shortcuts would do) I might try and get on the Machinima scene :naughty:

use FRAPS!!! it is so great with half life 2!
as mentioned earlyer in this post, fraps is not good for making high quality or perfect fluent videos of halflife2.

*EDIT* ITS A SETTING

do this go to Video>Frame Rate.....> click "Change so video and audio durations match (9.980fps)"

:smoking:

You could probably just changed the CFG to 9.980 instead of 30fps for the bind key....

oh
yeah ... sry
i thougth the ppl would figure that out for themselfes ... ill add it in the initial post
oh .. i cant edit it anymore ... :(

errrm. i have all on high apart from the AA on X2...

anyways when i use FRAPS for MOHAA (medal of honour allied assault) and COD (call of duty) fraps is bad because it eats up all your FPS...

But when i use FRAPS with HALF LIFE 2...it still runs SMOOTH AS ANYTHING! im not joking! i mean it doesn't feel like fraps is running!

i make alot of movies for it and it is great hehe :D

and this is the point
i have a pc alot worse then yours
and my videos are
fsaa x 4 (no difference in the video if i turn to x6)
aniso x 8 (no difference in the video if i turn to x16)

AND THE BIGGEST PLUS IS

that the fps dont slow down any bit when heavy phsyics calculations are going on.

cod has the same system .. since its based on q3.
you can render even with a p2 200 and a tnt 2 videos with framerates of 30fps

Since we are posting here, anyone remember off the top of their head how to record a timedemo of you playing and how to load them?

hey i use fraps it is great...

BUT i did it your way jacen...and i watched it ingame and it was great smooth quality i loved it thanks..

my question is...

when i goto where the DEM file is located in "valve/steam/steamapps/username/halflife2/hl2" it shows it as XXX.DEM file.

anys the question is HOW can i make this into a BINK movie? i do have BINK converter but doesn't seem to work. also how can i watch the DEM file?! i know i can watch it in the half life 2 game. but how else can i watch the DEM file (sorry for being a noob)

Why are you doing it that way? Use the demo editing features in Source and then make your mpeg's after you've smoothed things out and improved the look of your demo's, even slow down the cool bits for extra showoffability... I made a sticky elsewhere (general editing) for people to post info, tutorials about it.

Command wise, fadein and fadeout alone make me revel in HL2's demo tech :D

"quake" (or is it shake)? Is a useful console command to throw about in dramatic areas...

Guys, I've followed the directions exactly but am getting no audio. The video comes out fine. I selected WAV audio and then selected the temp.wav. I then saved it as an avi...Any ideas?

You should get audio. Any errors? Also, to save space, you might want to compress the audio by selecting full processing and compression after that. Mp3 is nice.

I'm kinda a n00b at this stuff. I got a video from a demo file but it is huge, how do i shrink the filesize??

Fraps cost money >_<

I had problems with sound in my videos if I have surround sound on. The file is not recognised by programs even though it is a wav file.

With 2.1 speakers attached I have had no problems with the sound. If it does not play at the right speed make sure Hostframe is set to 25 or above. If you don't make this change it records the movie at 10fps and videos are typically rendered at 25fps. I use Videomach for my movies and it works fine.

My first movie
