I'm trying to get 5.1 surround sound to work with my Audigy 2 sound card on my reciever. I'm not hooking it up to a computer only 5.1 reciever, it's the same reciever I hookup my PS2 and TV to also...the problem is, I can't get the 5.1 to work with my Audigy 2. Any tips or pointers you can give me? (if you have tried this before).

Well

What are you trying to output to your reciever? Games?, Movies?

Games are not in 5.1 unless you have intels HD audio or Nvidias soundstorm which encodes dolby digital in realtime, so you will only get stereo.

Make sure you are using an optical or coaxial cable (s/pdif or toslink) cable to connect them, and that your sound card is set to using digital out in its control pannel.

Lastly make sure any DVD playing software is set to using the digital out or passing the audio through without doing any processing on it as thats what your recievers for.

My reciever doesn't have a coax input :(. So I guess it can't be done. I'm using RCA cables connected to my soundcard output jack (non-digital)

Have you run the speaker configuration program that comes with the audigy yet, it will allow you to setup what kind of output the card gives, whether its 2.1, 5.1 etc. Don't really know that much about it, and although I have the card, I only use 2.1 speakers so I'm not too sure about connecting 5.1

I know how to do it, and it's easy. First understand you'll just be using an analog signal.

Then go to Radio Shack and get 3 "1/8 minijack to RCA splitters".

These 3 will plug into the back of your soundcard. Then run RCAs from the splitters into the 5 channel analog input of your receiver. (front, surround, and center/sub) It's as easy as that.

If you have a second receiver or a boom box with RCA inputs I can also tell you how to connect that on either side to turn it into 7.1 but it takes different splitters.
