Police in Britain are conducting trials on a small battery-powered, radio-controlled helicopter called the Microdrone that comes with a camera and a loudspeaker. The manufacturer's demonstration video points out that the copter works as a peeping tom device. (Not that the police would ever misuse it.)

I can see that thing getting shot down (and I mean literally) by people who notice it spying on them.

Also, the first thing I thought of was this:
scanner_full.jpg

Cant be a good sign for the state of our governments.

They'll probably just arrest a load of speeding motorists with it. As worrying as this is though, I can't help thinking it's pretty damn impressive.

Huh, I've never noticed that flashlight above the scanner before.

What, the thing that blinds you when you first start playing the game?

Also, the UK government does a lot of surveillance and data collection.
I guess we're just lucky that they couldn't supervise a paper bag. Double edged sword.

I don't see how. Current speed detection equipment is only accurate within 10% (allegedly) , so how could a gliding object of indeterminate speed, location and altitude measure accurately the speed of cars which would hold up beyond reasonable doubt in court?
Plus as I said, the government is regularly incompetent.

seriously that's pretty ****ed up...it has an incredible resolution and steadiness!

i guess it's relatively cheap so shooting it down would really not get you far. and besides a gun shoot will give you away and how many people own a gun? + it has a GPS which will lead the cops on you.

the sunbathing woman is a good example how this is gonna get abused.

this is some serious shit going on!!

I always figured it came from the eye.

I like how the gyroscope corrects the position as the guy pushes it. I had a similar experience with a blimp at work.

wow , you guys are pretty serious about surveilance eh?.
i think the highres cam is just for testing , they cant afford to store images at that quality ...

I don't mind CCTV at all. If it stops a terroist attack, or catches a criminal, or whatever, then I'm all for it. The only thing I'd object to is having it inside our houses. That would suck ass.
1984 ftmfw! if your not a prole...

Uugh.

Any legal claims if it hits you or something?

This thing is actually .. kida cute ..
Pretty useless, but cute.

Mabye this thing will start chasing people too?

Actually the rotor blades could make that kinda messy..

They used one at V festival to catch drugs. If they had used one at Reading, it would have been battered out of the sky and shit on.

Despite the implications for general liberty and government power that's pretty cool. D:

Of course, it won't just be used to strengthen an orwellian police state! Such devices will likely see employment in the emergency services, in disaster relief, in documentary filming...the benefits outweigh the drawbacks!

Small = cute, right? :thumbs:
