How can i make water?

I am a good editor... i made the top of the func_water the water texture, but it looks really bad (chateau water), so i tryed one of the other ones... in my texture browser it appears purple.. but in the 3d view it shows nice water. Ingame though, this nice water goes al glitchy and it is pink and looks like a giant leak in the map.

Am i doing anything wrong?? Help plz (i got 9800 xt)
 
Tou have to make a skybox for it to look right... that might be the problem?
 
Skybox??? what you mean.. the water as part of the 3d skybox, or just any sky will make it work?
 
DO NOT USE FUNC_WATER OR THE OTHER ONE. Just move it back to a world brush and texture it water, doesnt matter if you nodraw other parts and it will work.
 
Ok I did what you said and I had better results, but if I use the aztec water texture it appears to be pink checkers, but underneath it looks good. So then I try pretty water texture, and its almost pitch black except for edges which are green, but underneath is fine. So I try the beneath water texture and it looks great on top, but then underneath its pitch black.... am I using the wrong water textures???
