How close is the Black Mesa Research Facility to a modern lab?

I was playing through the game the other day and was just wondering.

it doesn't look much like any of the labs ive worked in, but those crazy physicists are always doing weird shit and require weird space because of it.

It's hard to imagine a lab with security guards equipped with gun, kevlar and helmet at each door.

Haha that's one of my career plans.

I just meant how it looked and was designed.

A modern lab is a very vague term. Scientific labs are suited to their scientific discipline. Walk into a DNA PCR lab and compare it to an organic chemist lab, they couldn't be more polar opposite. Admittedly my scientific background has never been near a physics centric lab, but again, it's a vast field.

Black Mesa had a huge range of scientific disciplines it dabbled in, COW lists the following:
Black Mesa undertakes research in various fields from standard scientific research to radiation, rocketry, theoretical physics, lasers, experimental propulsion, hydraulics, robotics, hydroelectricity, genetics, zoology, applied mathematics and a very wide spectrum of research into chemistry and all manner of physics research.
I can't comment on the physics based ones, but nothing in BM represents a genetic or zoology lab accurately! But hey...whatever, we didn't see the whole place and the game is way old now.
