Sorry this is so basic, but I am stuck at the very beginning. I have searched the forum, and also searched http://support.steampowered.com/. This is the first game I have bought, so I have no idea what to do next.
How do I get out of the station? I get to the point where there are 3 bits of luggage on a table, and some aggressive guards. What next?
Assistance much appreciated.

I'm going to guess you are talking about HL2. It kinda help if you actually name the game that you need help with, as there are several Valve games that people post about in this forum section. That's why it is called "Valave games help", and not just "HL2 help". Anyway, you just need to try and exit that little area, and when they close the gate, follow the guard that opens the door and says "follow me". It's kind of hard to get it wrong when the game spell it out for you. I'm not sure how you couldn't get past this part. It's the only thing you can do at that point...

Also: Google for a HL2 walkthrough. That means you go to the google website, put "HL2 walkthrough" into the text box, and hit enter. Choose one that suits you, and you should be set. A walkthrough "walks" you through a game, telling you how to complete it, solve the puzzles etc. You can just use them on the parts of a game you get stuck on - just skim down the page untill you find the part that tells you what to do in the part of the game you are stuck on.

Hi. Thanks for the info.
Yes, it is halflife 2 I am using.
I am following the walkthrough at
http://uk.faqs.ign.com/articles/568/568483p1.html
but it doesn't help.
I follow the guy closely off the train, but he puts the luggage down.
the walkthrough says
The Combine will tell the guy with the luggage to go away, and
when the refuses, he'll start to beat the guy up.
but this does not happen. He goes away.
but I can't move any more. I think possibly I get zapped by a Scanner, though I have no idea why, there was a white flash, but I can still look around ok.

when I went back to the game after posting that there a guard repeatedly hitting me!?

I tried starting the game again. This time I didn't get so close the other passengers, and they both put down their suitcases, and walked through the one way circular gate. The stopped at a point where they could see out of the cage. I walked on to the point where the luggage is on the tables - same problem as before, how do you get past this point?

I tried to take a screen shot, but the game seems to have taken over the computer completely, so that if I want to resume normal functions, such as print the screen, I need to quit out of the game, so I don't know how to take a screen shot.

I'm only able to visit this forum while playing the game by using a second computer. Is there a way to make the game run in a window instead of full screen? Esc doesn't do it!

Look to your left; there'll be a guard (CP) standing on either side of a doorway in a fence-wall-type-thing. On the far side of the fence-cage, you should be able to see another CP and a train. Go into the cage and an alarm will go off. Another CP will come out of a side door in the cage; go with him.

The guards are bullies, so give them some space and they won't hit you.

After you get off the train, head forward to the screen, turn left, follow that area round (speak to some citizens with 'e' to work out what is going on). Follow the queue of citizens, walk into the cage with the "Nova Prospekt sign", follow the guard who emerges from the door, gawk and go "who?" and then err... i hope you can figure out the rest from there :P

Thanks for the messages. I got a bit further, but I wound up in a cupboard. I don't think this is my kind of game! I don't like ugly and I don't like violence; and I like things I can learn easily and are fun along the way. What am I doing here?!?! For some reason I thought that the fact it was popular meant I would like it!?
Hey ho.
Anyone want to buy a full spec DVD of the game with all the trimmings?

Now that you've installed it, the resale value is zero unless you sell your Steam account information at the same time. Presumeably, you don't have any other games on the account though, so this should not be too much of a problem. (In future, perhaps you should play Demo versions of games before assuming that they're going to be to your tastes? The HL2 demo contains the section you've been playing and the scariest section in the game, and could have saved you money)

That the game confuses and perplexes you is kind of an alien idea to most here... Though it lacks a tutorial on the very basics of playing a First Person Shooter, it does lead you by the hand on most other things and is quite forgiving in that sense. There is probably little sense in wrestling with something that is completely unclear to you, but given time, playing such a game would become second nature and most would argue that this game of all games is completely worth it.

What exactly do you mean by "ugly" by the way? Is your computer actually up to the task of running the game (like this or does everything seem blurry and undefined? The fact that you're giving information like "wound up in a cupboard" sounds strange for a game where it's always very clear what is going on). Or do you simply prefer things to be lighter and fluffier? ^^

PS. Screenshots can be taken with F5. They are dumped in c:\program files\steam\steamapps\accountname\half-life2\hl2\screenshots (wherever you installed steam may differ).

Thanks for that kupoartist, it seems like thoroughly useful information. Perhaps I'll try a totally basic first person shooter first and get a bit of familiarity with the genre, and then try it again.

By ugly I mean drab and dark and depressing, like a channel 4 movie. Most of my long life was like that, so I am looking mostly for environments which are more upbeat; lighter and fluffier is probably not a bad summary of my preferences. If I want dark depressing crud with a bit of real violence and risk I can hang out in the bad area of any modern conurbation, and I have seen more than enough of all that. I prefer sunshine and nature. I may be in the wrong genre all together!

Yeah, sounds like HL2's pretty much exactly the kind of atmosphere you -wouldn't- like... pretty much the entire theme of the game is "ooh, dark, creepy, oppressive, OHGODSHOOTIT." There aren't a lot of bright sunny places... you might try the Highway 17 chapter, all you have to worry about there are antlions.
Alternately, I might suggest the UT2004 demo – lightweight, no storyline to speak of, lots of action, and turn-down-able gore. :p

I think it's probably taken as read that shooting things probably isn't your style in general. It's difficult to think of a "light and fluffy" shooting game. There have been one or two in the distant past, but they basically weren't very good. I'm sure you can stomach something that isn't all candy floss and bunnies though. I mean, HL2 is a pretty bleak game (the only bleaker games would be something like Doom III, because Hell isn't a very nice place), that just probably needs to be taken down a few notches.

A series of Three games called "Timesplitters" was a bit more tongue in cheek, but wasn't released on PC (I think the later two games were on all the major consoles). "No one lives forever" and its sequel has aged a bit, but are a sort of send up of 60s spy films a thus a lot less bleak. There was a comic book styled game called XIII a while back that may be of interest, but again it's quite old. At a stretch, consider Far Cry, which is set on lush tropical islands. The cons with Far Cry are: it can be quite hard at times, and it has a really silly story with really hammy characters. May be what you're after, but it's hardly gripping stuff in that sense :)

I wouldn't recommend Unreal Tournament 2004 to anyone who is unfamiliar with the genre, because unless you want to go online and endure losing a lot, you'll be playing repeatetive and uninteresting games against computer opponents. The settings aren't nearly so bleak though.

Thanks again kupoartist. I see what you mean, "Timesplitters" and "No one lives forever" do look a bit more lighthearted!

If you could texture, you could retexture all the walls, CP's and people to be rabbit people or something. Just throwing that out before i have to leave for school.
