When the time is right, I would like to download updates from steam. Unfortunately, my computer doesn't have
a) a internet connection, and
b) a broadband/modem card
however, we both have lan connections. If I wanted to connect to my dads computer, would I
a) be able to download from the internet
b) require me to configure my internet settings

I don't know the process, so if anyone here has been throught the same process, I would like to know the step-by-step of how to do this

You could download whatever you want from your Dad's PC, put the desired file in Network shared folders, hop back to your PC and retrieve from Network folder.

Hmmm I'm sure it's possible. What internet connection has your dad got? Because broadband may require special equipment or cables you don't have, I don't really know.

:dozey: Wait a minute, how could you have LAN connection without a broadband modem in your PC?

shh u lot know nothing:p

is your dads internet connection from modem to pc via usb ?

if it is you can do this

get a ethernet crossover cable , cheap it must be a crossover

plug both your computers in, and go to network conenctions make a new connection allowing internet access to other ppl on the network( is very easy)

then just run the same wizard do what it tells u and hey presto

if ur dads modem is going into the ethernet port on his pc/mobo then the modem might have a usb port aswell, if not u need another ethernet network card, which is like 10 quid

and then u can do the same thing up there:)

OTHER STUFF:

ailevation, broadband modems are basically a conenction to another netowrk,

whereas witihn a computer you normally just get ethernet ports, which are todays standard networking ports,

u can get internal modems which would make your statemnet true but now a days domestically ppl dont bother

too make a foldered shared ona network , u must right click the desired folder go to sharing and allow it to be shared, and define who has what access in that window,

pretty much what Joims said.
I think accessing another computer for internet access is called Ad-hoc, but that may be a term used for wireless networking.

I managed to pick up PCI network cards for £1.49 from some guys ebay shop, though hes out now. Just search ebay, you see buy-it-nows very cheap

and the windows wizard does make it easy

No, it refers to a base station-less wireless network, usually excluding internet access.

The most useful thing to do would be set up the computer with the internet connection with Internet Connection Sharing, then connect the two with a crossover cable, as indicated.

Thank you for that, I didn't realise broadband actually connects to his ethernet slot. Luckily he's got a second slot and I have a crossover cable, as well as an ethernet on mine as well

Another question. Would I have to keep my dads computer on to act as a server to the internet, whilst using my computer as a client
