Is there an easy way to do this? I read something about it, but there were no instructions about how I could make my game do this. Or is there something I could download? I'd love to have this effect in the game.

But they do.......
i just played hl2
all the weapons have muzzle flash except for the non-bullet firing ones obviously

Maybe he means the environment lighting up since that doesn´t happen in HL2?

The flash caused by burning nitro powder that comes out the barrel of a gun when it is fired.

Nitro Powder...?

You can set it in the console if it doesnt do that....which it should

Terribly sorry. Yes I am referring to the light from a fired weapon illuminating the environment. Like the walls around you or whatever. I heard there's a fix for this. I read something about it at Planet Half-Life. I have no idea what the fix is. It BOTHERS me now... It makes no sense that there's no lighting when you fire a weapon.

MarcoPollo I've tried it in the console. It simply doesn't work. I've changed the muzzle flash from 1 to 0 and back to 1 again...I can see no visible difference, and CERTAINLY no light on the walls or anywhere else. And I'm trying this in Ravenholm where it's dark. I fire in a pitch dark alley, and it looks absurd. I'm firing away but there's no light from the gunfire...

Whats your system setup, mainly your graphics card?
Might that come into play if it was really low like Dx7\Dx6.

My system is a 3.0 GHz PC w/ 1.5 GB of RAM and as for the video card...it's the ATI X800 XT. I don't think the card is the problem. Can anyone please confirm that their gunfire is indeed lighting up the walls around them? If someone confirms it, I'll be more inclined to think something is actually wrong. I've heard that HL2 doesn't have the lighting from gunfire effects, but then I read there is a way to fix that. But the console command doesn't do it for me. Besides, something like that should be on by default...

It llights up only characters for me, or other ingame objects, but not the map itself.

after playing some more i realized what u mean....um use the flashlight? lol

I'm with Ultimape. I'm sure that's the case - it only lights up nearby charcters and objects.

Love the user name - Sanjuro. You a Shogo fan by any chance?

Source hates dynamic lighting. period. If Valve included dynamic lighting that apply to the BSP brushes (aka levels) your framerates will be screwed if you continuously shoot the damn gun. Hell, source doesnt even have dynamic shadows! (oops) :p

now, now, dun be hatin' on Source :)

czrsink, I'm not a Shogo fan, sorry. I read a little bit about it though since you mentioned that, and it appears that they borrowed the name from the same place I did. Sanjuro, for me, comes from the 1961 Akira Kurosawa film, Yojimbo, and the 1962 sequel, Sanjuro. Also known as the inspiration for the Clint Eastwood "Dollars" trilogy and the horrible Bruce Willis movie, Last Man Standing. Heh.

Anyway, the reason I think Shogo borrowed the name from those movies is because apparently the main character is Sanjuro and his brother is Toshiro. Well, Sanjuro in the Kurosawa films was played by the greatest Japanese actor ever...Toshiro Mifune. So...there you go. :-) Besides, since I think Sanjuro literally means "30 years old" in Japanese, I doubt anyone would really be using it as a name. In the movie Yojimbo the samurai just makes up the name on the spot because he's around that age. Then he stares outside and the first flower he sees became his last name. lol.

in the newest substance mod release they added in the light from the muzzle flashes

I get the lighting but in my opinion its far too yellow.
It should be lighter in colour.....unless its blackpowder guns with a fireball.

is there any way to get the muzzle flash part of the patch and not have the rest of the game edited from what Valve intended?

doesn't counterstrike:s have this? if so, it doesn't see like a limitation of the source engine...

coutner strike has muzzle flashes for guns that flash from their muzzel. (ie not silenced)

I was in a hldm map with a dynamic haning light that actualy lit stuff up, it was pretty cool.

I'm not hatin' Source, I just pointed out that its lighting capabilties still doesnt quite match those of Far Cry's or Doom 3's. But again, Source sure kick their asses :naughty:

this is out of the subject, but isn't it pure joy when fast zombies slap you in the face as you fire rounds on them with the SMG and you see all the delicious bumb mapping on their ribs glowing under the holy light of the muzzle flash?
