Sorry for the noob question, but how do I have Steam NOT automatically execute when I have just turned the PC on?

The main problem is that whenever Steam opens on my computer, the screen resolution goes to a ridiculous resolution (things are even bigger and pixelated than in 800x600). When I exit Steam the screen instantly returns to normal. This isnt a major problem of course, but it's pretty annoying to add about a minute to startup as it all happens so slowly.

At the lower right hand of your screen, you'll see the Steam icon in your tray. Right click on it, click "settings", then select the interface tab.

You can uncheck the checkbox and you'll be good.

Right click the steam Icon in your taskbar (lower right hand side of your screen) click settings>click the Interface tab>untick the box that says run steam when windows starts

At the lower right hand of your screen, Right click the steam Icon in your taskbar....
