I'm buying parts for my new pc at the moment and I've got everything else and I am going to buy 2 SATA II drives.

How do I install WinXP on both drives and select which drive to launch when I boot my PC up?

Yes, I've looked on Google but I thought you guys would explain it to me easier :P

I presume I would have to set-up 3 partitions. One for the the dual-booting program, One for WinXP on Drive 1 and One for WinXP on Drive 2?

you dont need 3 partitions. just boot up with the xp cd, choose drive 1 or 2,partion and install. then do the same for drive 2. when you turn on your computer. after the bios screen it should ask you to choose which one you would like to boot. i can tell you how to change the name of it later because it will probably say the same for both.

Ah, Thanks. I was thinking it was all complicated heh :)

So, how would I change the names of them?

Take left boot. Place left foot in left boot. Adjust foot until comfort achieved. Tie bootlace.

Repeat for right boot.

DUAL BOOT AHOY!

Just wondering but why do you want the same Windows XP on 2 drives on the same PC?

i was just thinking that also physcofreak are you sure your not trying to do raid??? which basically uses both hard drives to run xp.

yea......why would you want two seperate drives to run two seperate installs of XP.....are you sure you just dont want one install of XP with access to both drives?

The purpose of a dual-boot is to allow for two operating systems on one computer. A dual-XP boot system will only serve to confuse you :P

I guess your right lol. How would I set it up so that I would be able to run WinXp on the one drive and just have the second drive for data?

Or will the drive automatically be recognised?

Install drives in system, boot up with winxp cd, format and install winxp on one drive, go into windows -> control panel -> admin tools -> computer management -> storage -> format the second drive and voila, you should then have a formatted empty drive on which to store anything you wish.

Alrighty then. Cheers :D

Well, since it seems his problem is solved... Im going to try and hijack this thread for my own dual boot question.

I have just bought the 64 bit xp version, and installed it on a different partition than my xp pro 32bit version. But whenever I boot from the 64 bit, i dont have internet access, and none of my programs work. I can access certain files on the drives, but if I open, say, a photoshop file, it wont be able to open photoshop. Is there a way to fix this?

What do you mean by "i don't have internet access"? Does it just hang or can't you get the connect dialog up?

When I open firefox i instantly get a "cannot connect to server" type message. Same with IE

If you bring up your modems properties, check if it is recieving or sending anything.

You need to get 64-bit drivers for your hardware, and 64-bit versions of any program you care to run on Pro 64-Bit. :(

Thank jebus I didn't buy it then.

Tough luck :(

Well im on a router, and my roomate has no troubles. Plus when i switch to 32 bit it works without a hitch. I think it has something to do with why the other programs wont work.

So I would need two versions of everything? Meh, I think ill just reformat and go cleanly with just the x64.

Don't try to run programs off the other partition. Just install it on the new Windows XP 64bit install. A lot of programs make registry entries and if you try to launch the program and it doesn't have an entry in the current OS you are running then no worky. And you will need 64bit drivers for all of your devices such as a 64bit network driver if you want to connect online.
