Hey everyone here is my deal.. I have a digital camcorder and firewire cable ect. I know how to get movies onto my computer but how can i turn them into say a quicktime file or a Windows media file so i can upload them and send it to my friends to watch? thanks.

First off, DO NOT use quicktime. It sucks, so does Real, and Windows media isn't all that great either. Convert it into an AVI file with an MPEG-4 video codec, if you don't know MPEG-4 compressed videos compress the video files to very small sizes, it's called the MP3 of videos. Divx is the most popular, but now it's gone commercial and you must pay for it, unless you want a worse version of it which is free. Xvid is free (open source) and just as good, some people think it's better:

I don't have a Digital Camcorder so I don't know if it uses compression or what type of video file it is once it's on your computer, but try Rad Video tools, it can encode videos and you can use any codec on your computer. Just choose XVID when you get to that part:

And I don't know how small you want the file to be, but here's an Xvid calculator, you tell it the length and quality you want, it'll tell you how large it will be or vice versa:

How do i put it on a site where people can download and view it?

You could give Virtual Dub a try. I know it can capture directly from most Digital Camcorders. You can go right in and save as an AVI after you have your Xvid or Divx codec.
Here is a guide

You should beable to check out www.videohelp.com for your question as well.

damnit...now after I reformated my computer my computer wont recognize my camecorder (plugged in via firewire) I am getting ANGRY.

Did you have the DV codec installed? Should.
